The best Greece honeymoon itinerary is simple: two nights in Athens, then two islands with at least three nights each, and a day of slack before your flight home. Ten days is the length most guides recommend, and a 7-day trip works if you stay on one island. Below you will find three day-by-day plans, the island pairings that work, how to get between them, when to go and what to build into each stop.
TL;DR
- Ten days is the sweet spot. Vogue’s honeymoon guide calls 10 days the minimum to get the most from Greece.
- Stay at least three nights per stop. Fewer than that and your honeymoon turns into a series of ferry queues.
- Go in shoulder season. May, June and September trade the July and August heat and crowds for easier, calmer days.
- Never ferry on departure day. Wind can cancel Aegean sailings, so keep a buffer before your flight home.
- A planner removes the guesswork. Sailing times, room categories and private experiences are easier when one person coordinates them all.

How many days you need for a Greece honeymoon
A week is workable. Ten days is comfortable. Twelve or more lets you add a third island or a slower final stop.
The logic is transit. Flying from the U.S. usually means arriving the next morning, and every island change costs half a day once you count packing, transfers and check-in. Guides advise staying at least three nights in each location and not overfilling the schedule. That rule shapes every plan below.
| Trip length | Structure | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 7 days | 2 nights Athens + 5 nights on one island | Couples with limited time who want to unpack once |
| 10 days | 2 nights Athens + 4 nights on each of two islands | The classic first Greece trip |
| 12 days | Athens + three islands, or two islands with a long final stay | Couples who want variety and a slow finish |
A 7-day honeymoon itinerary: Athens and one island
A 7-day structure of two nights in Athens and five on one island keeps logistics to a minimum. Santorini, Naxos or Paros all suit it.
Day 1: Arrive in Athens. Check in, rest, and keep the evening easy. A rooftop dinner with the Acropolis lit above you is a gentle first night.
Day 2: Athens. Visit the Acropolis early, before the day heats up. Spend the afternoon in the Plaka and Anafiotika neighborhoods and book a private dinner somewhere you will remember.
Day 3: Fly or sail to your island. A morning flight keeps the day free for a first swim and sunset.
Days 4 to 7: Island days. Alternate one active day with one slow day. A boat day, a wine tasting, a cooking class, a spa afternoon and a long, unscheduled beach day cover most couples.
Day 8: Return to Athens or fly straight home. If your island has a direct departure, use it, or return to Athens the evening before your flight.
A 10-day honeymoon itinerary: Athens plus two islands
This is the plan we would hand most couples. One 10-day structure pairs two nights in Athens with four nights on each of two islands, for example Santorini and Milos. Another popular version spends two nights in Athens, four in Santorini, three in Mykonos and a final night in Athens.
Here is how we would pace it, with one island that is dramatic and one that is quiet.
| Day | Stop | Focus |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Athens | Arrive, rest, rooftop dinner |
| 2 | Athens | Acropolis at opening, old-town walk, private dinner |
| 3 | Travel to island one | Flight or morning ferry, sunset at the hotel |
| 4 | Island one | Village walk, long lunch, sunset viewpoint |
| 5 | Island one | Private boat day or catamaran cruise |
| 6 | Island one | Wine tasting or cooking class, spa evening |
| 7 | Travel to island two | Morning transfer, afternoon at the beach |
| 8 | Island two | Secluded beach, slow dinner by the water |
| 9 | Island two | Open day, optional boat trip or spa |
| 10 | Island two | Last swim, transfer toward your flight |
Put the dramatic island first and the quiet one second. After sunset crowds and caldera views, a calm beach town is what most couples want for the last few days. Then you fly home rested, not wound up.
If you would like to see a finished version, our Athens, Paros and Naxos 10-day package follows this exact rhythm of one arrival city and two islands. Our 9-day Athens, Mykonos and Santorini vacation covers the best-known trio.
A 12-day honeymoon itinerary: add a third stop
Twelve days lets you add a larger island, or keep two islands and extend each stay. A typical pace is two nights in Athens, four in Santorini, three in Mykonos, and three on Crete, where there is more space, more food and more beaches than the smaller Cyclades.
This is also where a cruise through the Cyclades starts to make sense, because you unpack once and wake up in a new harbor. See our Athens, Mykonos, Santorini and Crete 12-day vacation for a land-based version, or our Cyclades cruise vacation for a sailing version.
Which islands pair well
The classic honeymoon pairing is Santorini and Mykonos. They are famous for good reasons, and also the busiest. Lonely Planet’s island-pairing advice points to quieter combinations such as Naxos with Koufonisia, and Corfu with Paxi.
We sort islands by the kind of days they give you:
- Santorini: caldera views, sunsets, cliffside suites with private plunge pools. Best for the first half of a trip. Our guide to planning a Santorini honeymoon covers a five-night stay in detail.
- Mykonos: beach clubs, nightlife and polished dining. Best if you want energy.
- Naxos and Paros: long beaches, village walks, good food and a slower tempo. Our Naxos vacation page shows what we arrange there.
- Zakynthos and Kefalonia: Ionian islands with green hills and sea caves. Our Athens, Zakynthos and Kefalonia 10-day package is built around them.
- Crete: the largest island, with mountains, beaches, wine and plenty of room.

Getting between Athens and the islands
You have two options: sail or fly.
By ferry. Athens has three main ports. Piraeus serves most routes, Rafina serves Mykonos, Tinos and Andros, and Lavrio serves Kea, Kythnos and some seasonal routes. To Santorini, a high-speed boat takes about five hours and a conventional ferry eight to twelve. Fast boats cost more. Slower ferries are cheaper and more comfortable.
By air. You can fly from Athens to six Cyclades island airports, with flights of roughly 35 to 50 minutes. Santorini is about 45 minutes by air.

The fair comparison is door to door. Airport transfers and check-in eat into the time a short flight saves, so a morning sail can feel just as quick for islands close to Piraeus or Rafina. For long routes such as Santorini, flying saves most of a day.
One rule worth repeating: never schedule a ferry on the same day as your flight home. A windy afternoon can cancel every high-speed sailing in the Aegean. Return to Athens the day before, and let that final night be a dinner, not a scramble.
When to go
July and August are the busiest and hottest months, with temperatures often above 86°F, high airfares and peak hotel rates. The Meltemi wind blows mostly from June to September, which is another reason to plan flexible island transfers.
Honeymooning outside July and August tends to give you a more peaceful trip. Indagare’s Melissa Biggs Bradley tells Vogue that a calmer season offers more authentic access to local culture. Local guides suggest June and September for warm weather with fewer people, and May or early October for Santorini and Mykonos, which stay crowded even in the shoulder months.
Winter is cooler and sometimes rainy, though Athens stays active. Some island services are seasonal, so a cold-weather trip works better as a city-focused plan.
Romantic ideas to build into each stop
Rather than packing days with sights, choose one anchor experience per day and leave the rest open. Honeymoon trips to Greece commonly include a sunset cruise, wine tasting, rooftop dining with Acropolis views, secluded beach days, village walks, spa treatments and cooking classes.
Our favorite ways to use them:
- Athens: an early private Acropolis visit, then a long dinner with the monument lit above you.
- Santorini: a caldera-view suite, a private sunset sail and a winery visit at golden hour.
- Mykonos: a day on a private boat to quiet coves, followed by a late dinner in town.
- Naxos or Paros: a village walk with a cooking class, then a beach with no schedule.
- Anywhere: one “nothing” day. Honeymoons need them.

Budgeting the pieces of the trip
A Greece honeymoon has four cost layers: flights from the U.S., hotels, transfers (ferries, flights, drivers) and experiences. Hotels vary most with island and season, since July and August carry peak rates and May or September usually soften them. Transfers are the cost couples forget, because a private driver, a fast ferry or a short flight each add up across three or four moves.
Experiences are where a plan becomes yours. A private sunset sail or a private chef dinner is a different price tier from a shared tour, and it helps to decide in advance which two or three are worth it. If a sailing day is on your wish list, these honeymoon yacht trip tips show how couples think about the cost of private charters.

Our perspective
Most honeymoon itineraries fail in the same way: too many stops, too little room. The couples who come home glowing are the ones who slowed down, chose the right hotel for each island and had someone handle the logistics.
After 35 years of designing high-end journeys, we plan Greece around the rhythm of the trip. That means matching the island to the mood, timing the ferry and flight legs sensibly, and building in buffer days so one windy afternoon never ruins a plan. It also means working with on-the-ground partners who can open doors a booking site cannot, such as a private boat day or a table at the right moment.
Our concierge-level approach is meant to give you one expert from the first conversation to your return home, with 24/7 support if anything shifts along the way. A honeymoon is the one trip you do not want to improvise.

FAQ
How many days do you need for a honeymoon in Greece?
Ten days is the length most honeymoon guides recommend, as it fits Athens and two islands without rushing. Seven days works if you pair two nights in Athens with five on one island. Add two more days if you want a third stop or a slower finish.
Which Greek islands are best for a honeymoon?
Santorini suits couples who want caldera views and sunsets, and Mykonos suits those who want beach clubs and dining. Naxos, Paros and the Ionian islands offer a quieter pace. Many couples pair one dramatic island with one calm one.
Is it better to take ferries or fly between islands?
For short routes close to Piraeus or Rafina, a morning ferry is often as quick as flying once airport time is counted. For longer routes such as Santorini, a flight of about 45 minutes saves most of a day. Whichever you choose, keep a buffer day before your flight home.
What is the best month for a Greece honeymoon?
June and September are popular for warm weather with fewer crowds, and May or early October are calmer still on the busiest islands. July and August are hottest and most expensive.
