by EliteWebsite October 9, 2024

Seeking wisdom from thirty-four high-performing leaders, their insights reveal how effective habits sharpen their leadership acumen. Concluding this wealth of knowledge, a Chief Growth Strategist highlights the strength found in intentionally embracing discomfort, rounding out a diverse spectrum of expert strategies.

Separate Reversible and Irreversible Decisions

One key habit I’ve embraced, inspired by Jeff Bezos, is separating reversible decisions from irreversible ones. By doing this, I can move quickly on things that aren’t permanent, knowing we can adjust course if needed. For decisions that have a long-lasting impact, I take more time to analyze. This approach has allowed me to make faster decisions while ensuring that more significant choices are carefully thought through, ultimately boosting my effectiveness as a leader.

Seek Regular Feedback

Seeking feedback regularly has been crucial to my effectiveness as a leader. Understanding strengths and areas needing improvement creates an environment where everyone feels heard. This open culture fosters trust, making the team more cohesive and productive. When people know their input is valued, they’re more likely to engage and contribute more effectively.

One approach I recommend is the “Start, Stop, Continue” framework. It’s simple and direct: team members provide feedback on what I should start doing, stop doing, and continue doing. This method not only highlights areas for growth but also reinforces positive behaviors. It keeps the feedback focused and actionable, ensuring that it leads to tangible improvements.

Encouraging honest feedback isn’t just beneficial for personal growth; it shapes the entire team. When leaders show a willingness to learn and adapt, it sets a powerful example. This habit of seeking feedback turns leadership into a shared journey of continuous learning. It makes the team more agile and ready to face challenges together.

Write for Clarity and Decision-Making

For me, writing isn’t just about content creation—it’s a tool for clarity and decision-making. When I write, whether it’s a social media post, a blog, or even planning out business strategies, it forces me to slow down, organize my thoughts, and focus on what really matters.

In early 2023, I committed to writing daily on LinkedIn. It quickly became a powerful habit, not only helping me build a large audience but also providing a structured way to reflect on my work, refine ideas, and communicate better with my team. Writing every day forces discipline and helps align my personal growth with business goals.

Prioritize Getting Enough Sleep

I prioritize getting enough sleep. Running a business requires focus, energy, and quick decision-making, and without proper rest, it’s hard to function at your best. Prioritizing sleep means I’m more alert, less stressed, and able to think clearly, which has a direct impact on how I manage the team and handle challenges.

Getting a solid night’s sleep allows me to approach each day with a fresh mind-set and the patience to handle complex situations. It’s a simple habit, but it makes a huge difference in how effectively I lead and support the team.

Engage in a Meaningful Hobby

One personal habit that contributes to my effectiveness as a leader is having a meaningful hobby outside of work. For me, practicing Chinese martial arts not only keeps me physically active but also strengthens my mental discipline. The philosophy behind balance, focus, and persistence translates directly into my work and leadership approach. I’ve found that engaging in something you’re passionate about, even when there’s no financial reward, fuels your drive and positively influences how you show up professionally and personally.

Dedicate Time to Mentoring

I make it a point to dedicate time each week to mentor someone outside my immediate circle or even outside the company. Engaging with diverse perspectives keeps me grounded and exposes me to fresh ideas and approaches. This habit not only contributes to personal growth but also brings new insights back to my organization. It reinforces the value of continuous learning and the importance of giving back to the community.

Mentoring others is important because it expands my horizons beyond the day-to-day operations of our company. It challenges me to think differently and stay adaptable in an ever-changing industry. By contributing to someone else’s growth, I also refine my communication and leadership skills. This reciprocal learning enriches our company culture and keeps innovation at the forefront.

Utilize the Eisenhower Matrix

Effective leadership often hinges on solid time-management. Using techniques like the Eisenhower Matrix, I categorize tasks to pinpoint what’s both urgent and important. This approach ensures I concentrate on high-impact activities, thereby maximizing productivity while minimizing stress.

The Eisenhower Matrix breaks tasks into four quadrants: urgent and important, important but not urgent, urgent but not important, and neither urgent nor important. Placing tasks in these categories helps prioritize effectively. Working on essential tasks that yield significant results first and delegating or postponing lesser priorities becomes straightforward.

Incorporating this method into daily routines keeps distractions at bay and ensures that goals align with actions. Building a habit around clear priorities promotes a focused work environment, driving efficiency and effectiveness as a leader.

Embrace Silence and Beginner’s Mindset

One habit that’s been key to my effectiveness as a leader is embracing silence and maintaining a beginner’s mindset. While these two traits might seem contradictory at first glance, they actually complement each other in fostering a powerful leadership style.

Silence makes room for deeper hearing and deep reflection. It lets people say everything they want, building trust and open discussion within a team. It also shows that you value other people’s ideas and opinions, which is very important for making connections and working together.

On the other hand, maintaining a beginner’s mindset makes me curious and ready to learn in every setting. It keeps me from getting comfortable or making assumptions based on what I know from the past. By being honest that I don’t know all the answers, I make it easy for everyone to participate and share their unique ideas. This approach has been very helpful in the fuel business, where keeping ahead of the curve and adjusting to new technologies and market trends is key to success.

These two habits are two sides of the same coin. They help me be a leader with both confidence and respect, knowing when to make decisions and when to listen and learn. This dual nature has helped me get through the tough problems in the fuel business and build a successful business.

Instill Genuine Morale

Ability to instill morale in a team. The difference between employees who do the bare minimum and a team that goes out of their way to get the job done is morale. Morale is the invisible force that encourages a team to push, sacrifice, and achieve a goal. I lead by example. Whether the team is brainstorming solutions to a challenge, celebrating a win, or debating an issue, I actively participate. Seeing me invested increases their morale and belief in collective ability.

Morale, built on empty praise or forced positivity as most leaders do, crumbles fast. Ignite genuine enthusiasm within your team through transparency. We have successfully created a sales force of team players and creative problem-solvers who would go the extra mile for our clients.

Be an Avid Tinkerer

I am an avid tinkerer. Over time, I’ve learned about writing, law, cooking, various languages, computer programming, graphic design, and dozens of other skills. This broad range of knowledge allows me to be a more effective leader because I have informed expectations for what my team is working on and can empathize when it doesn’t go according to plan.

Systemize Processes for Efficiency

One habit that contributed greatly to my effectiveness as a leader is systemization. I realized pretty early on that it is important to document every process, creating systems that could basically run themselves.

This habit turned out to be one of those game-changing ingredients, particularly when Design Hero (my other company) scaled. Automation of repeat work and structured workflows freed up the mental space for growth and strategic decisions.

I implemented tools like ClickUp and Calendly, which allowed me to manage client projects and schedules without having to micromanage. This reduced my stress and ensured things ran smoothly when I wasn’t directly involved.

With these systems in place, I managed to save time, and the results for my clients also remained consistent.

It is a practice that has taught me through application that leadership is not necessarily about making big decisions. It’s about creating the right environment for things to fall in place as planned, with minimal supervision. I think this approach is the best for our companies moving forward for long-term success and sustainability.

Cultivate Curiosity

Curiosity has been my secret weapon as a business leader. It’s not just about gathering knowledge; it’s about cultivating a mindset of continuous growth and exploration. Curiosity keeps me ahead of industry trends and ready to pivot with market changes, positioning my business for success. Companies that embrace curiosity and innovation are more likely to launch breakthrough products—now that’s a game-changer!

But curiosity doesn’t stop there. It sparks innovation and opens the door to fresh ideas and solutions. It also helps me connect deeply with my team, understanding their motivations and challenges. This fosters trust and collaboration, creating an unstoppable force. Research shows that engaged employees are more productive, proving that when you truly understand your team, everyone wins.

Most importantly, my enthusiasm for learning inspires my team to dive into their own journeys of discovery, creating a vibrant culture of continuous improvement. In today’s fast-paced business landscape, curiosity isn’t just a trait; it’s the heartbeat of effective leadership and organizational success.

Reserve Time for Personal Development

One habit that I’ve cultivated over my career as a leader is to reserve at least two hours every week for learning and personal development. This learning can take different forms depending on what else I have going on. When it’s a busy week, and I don’t have a lot of extra time, it might simply mean listening to an audiobook on leadership, recruiting, etc., during my commutes. When I have more time and mental energy to spare, I might watch a webinar, take part in a workshop, or attend a seminar or panels at a conference. The specific activity is less important than the fact that I always make time in my schedule to learn and grow.

This kind of ongoing learning makes me a better leader in multiple ways. For one thing, I’m constantly expanding my knowledge and skills and can apply those things I learn to my work. It also sends a message to the team that I’m fully committed to continuous learning, which has made it easier to instill that kind of culture across the workplace. When I’m taking part in more active learning like workshops and conferences, I’ll share information about them with my colleagues and encourage them to take part, too. We also have a habit of sharing the most useful things we learn with each other, bringing that knowledge back to the entire team so that we can all grow as a result.

Practice Decisiveness

My decisiveness has helped me immensely as a leader. I’ve never been the type to hem-and-haw over a choice; rather, I make it and move on. I’ve noticed that people I admire have the same tendency. On the flip side, those who have trouble choosing an actionable path tend to be wishy-washy in other areas too. They often don’t have a strong sense of self, and this can lead to a lack of confidence. It can also make it hard to stick to one’s ethics. Being open-minded is one thing, but if you’re too easily persuadable, it can look like fair-weather morality.

I’d recommend other business owners try going on instinct for a week. Then, look back and consider your success rate. You might just find that giving a decision too long to marinate actually lessens its eventual efficacy. This is a case of less being more.

Maintain a Consistent Exercise Routine

Maintaining a consistent exercise routine is a cornerstone of my effectiveness as a leader. Regular physical activity helps manage stress and boosts my overall well-being, both physically and mentally. This habit provides the stamina needed to tackle day-to-day challenges, ensuring I stay energized and focused throughout my workday.

Exercise routines have a significant impact on mental clarity. Whether it’s a morning run or an evening gym session, these activities clear my mind, allowing for better decision-making and problem-solving. High-pressure situations become easier to navigate, as the mental boost from regular exercise enhances my ability to stay calm and think critically.

A practical approach involves scheduling workouts just like meetings. Treat exercise as a non-negotiable part of your daily agenda. This ensures it remains a regular part of your routine, helping to foster resilience, maintain high energy levels, and keep your mind sharp. Investing this time into your physical health translates directly into improved leadership performance.

Build Strong Relationships and Network

Building strong relationships and expanding your network are paramount to effective leadership. Every week, I set aside time to connect with peers and mentors. These interactions are not just about exchanging pleasantries, but about exploring mutual interests and potential collaborations. The insights and support I receive from these connections often translate into actionable strategies and opportunities for growth.

The essence of effective networking lies in genuine engagement and consistent follow-up. Rather than casting a wide net, focus on cultivating deeper connections with a core group of professionals. Regular coffee meetings, quick catch-up calls, or shared industry events can significantly strengthen these relationships. This approach not only broadens your knowledge base but also positions you as a valuable resource within your network.

Implementing a framework like the “5-3-1” rule can streamline your networking efforts. Reach out to five new contacts, nurture three existing relationships, and solidify one key connection each week. This structured approach ensures that networking remains a priority without becoming overwhelming. Over time, these relationships become instrumental in driving both personal and professional growth, anchoring your leadership in a robust support system.

Prioritize Daily Reading

The personal habit that has greatly enhanced my effectiveness as a leader is prioritizing reading daily. I set aside time daily to delve into books, articles, and case studies related to business strategy, leadership, and industry trends. This habit broadens my perspective and provides valuable insights that I can apply to our operations at BestOnlineCabinets. I’m better equipped to anticipate challenges and seize opportunities by staying informed. Sharing key takeaways with my team fosters a culture of learning and encourages others to explore new ideas, ultimately driving innovation and growth within the company.

Hire Based on Character

At our HVAC company, we are committed to hiring based on character rather than solely on skills. This has been fundamental in building a strong, cohesive team that aligns with our company’s values and culture. I firmly believe that skills can be taught and developed over time, but character is inherent.

When I interview potential team members, I prioritize their integrity, work ethic, and attitude. I once hired a candidate who didn’t have extensive technical experience but demonstrated exceptional problem-solving abilities and a genuine desire to learn. This individual quickly adapted to our work environment, embraced our company values, and became a valuable team player.

By focusing on character, we have created a workplace where trust, collaboration, and mutual respect thrive. This habit supports a positive company culture, as team members feel supported and valued for who they are, not just what they can do. It also enhances employee retention, as individuals who align with our values are more likely to stay engaged and committed to the company’s mission.

Write Weekly-Reflection Emails

Writing a weekly-reflection email to myself has improved my effectiveness overall. Every Friday afternoon, I sit down to write about what I have completed that week, what is still in progress, and what the plan is for next week. This not only allows me to mentally pack the week away, but it means that I know exactly where to pick up again when I return on Monday morning. This has been one of the healthiest habits I have adopted, as it empowers me to take some time off on the weekend and actually relax.

Have a Clear Vision

Having a clear vision for the future is a habit that’s crucial to my effectiveness as a leader. I regularly set aside time to think about where I want my business to be in the next few years.

This habit keeps me focused, helps guide my team with purpose, and allows us to navigate challenges more confidently. It’s not just about goals but about pushing boundaries, seeing opportunities others might miss, and inspiring everyone to work toward that bigger picture together.

Listen More Than You Speak

One habit that truly shapes my leadership is listening more than I speak. It’s easy to assume we have all the answers, but the best insights often come from others. By asking questions and genuinely hearing my team’s thoughts, I discover solutions I might’ve missed.

It’s not about pretending to listen—it’s about valuing every perspective. This simple habit has made decision-making more grounded and keeps me connected to what really matters in our work.

Set Clear Priorities Daily

One habit that helps me be an effective leader is starting each day by setting clear priorities. At Wimpole Clinic, there’s always a lot going on, and it’s easy to get caught up in the daily hustle.

Taking a few minutes each morning to focus on the most important tasks keeps me grounded and ensures I tackle the clinic’s and our clients’ key needs. This helps me stay organized, make better decisions, and be available to my team.

Having clear goals allows me to lead with purpose and ensure that everything we do supports the clinic’s long-term vision. It’s a simple routine, but it greatly impacts how I manage people and projects.

Dr. Michael May

Delegate Tasks Effectively

Delegating tasks effectively is very important. Early in my career, I realized that trying to do everything myself not only overwhelmed me but also hindered the growth of my team and the business as a whole. Learning to trust my employees with responsibilities has been a game-changer.

Delegation allows me to focus on high-level strategy and decision-making while empowering my team members to take ownership of their roles. Assigning tasks according to each person’s strengths and expertise, I am able to increase productivity as well as encourage a sense of accountability and confidence within the team. When we took on a large residential project that required extensive planning and coordination, I delegated specific responsibilities to team leaders based on their individual skills. This streamlined our workflow and made sure that each part of the project was managed by someone with the right experience.

It also helps in cultivating a collaborative culture where team members feel valued and heard. It opens up opportunities for mentorship, as I can guide my staff while they take the lead on projects. This habit has not only improved operational efficiency but also contributed to higher employee satisfaction, as everyone feels more involved in the success of our company.

Focus on Personalized Leadership

It’s tough to pick just one habit, but if I had to choose, it’s shifting my perception of leadership from being about me to focusing on the people in front of me. For me, this means leaning into personalized leadership.

A common limiting belief about leadership is that we have to embody these larger-than-life figures—like Malala or Mandela. Don’t get me wrong, their impact is incredible, and there’s always something to learn from them. But thinking we have to match that can be overwhelming and distract from how we cultivate our own leadership style.

What takes the pressure off is shifting your perspective to focus on your people. Personalized leadership is key here. A one-size-fits-all approach just doesn’t work, especially if you’re managing a diverse group of individuals. Every person has their own strengths, communication styles, and motivators. To lead effectively, I’ve learned to adapt my style to meet each person where they are, instead of expecting them to fit a mold.

Personalized leadership means taking the time to really understand each team member—not just what they do, but what drives them, what challenges them, and how they prefer to communicate. It’s about going deeper to build a meaningful connection so that I can offer the right support and guidance to help them thrive. At the end of the day, it’s relationship-building. If you understand people as individuals, you’ll be far more effective at leading them as a team.

In my experience, this approach fosters trust and engagement in ways that traditional leadership styles don’t. When people feel understood and valued for who they are, they’re more motivated and bring their best selves to work.

Another big piece of personalized leadership is about investing in each person’s growth. Instead of assuming everyone wants the same kind of career progression or recognition, I have regular conversations with each team member about their goals and aspirations. This helps me guide them in a way that aligns with their personal goals and shows them a clear path for growth—leading to higher retention and overall satisfaction.

Ultimately, personalized leadership creates a high-performance culture where people feel empowered to do their best work. It requires intention and effort, but the payoff is huge: stronger relationships, more trust, better performance, and a motivated, engaged team.

Meditate Daily

Meditation. Every day, I carve out time to sit in silence and just breathe. In the middle of all the noise and decisions, those few quiet minutes help me reset and approach things with a fresh perspective. I’ve noticed it makes me more patient and thoughtful, which is huge when leading a team. Plus, when I’m grounded, I can show up better for my team, handle stress more smoothly, and keep everyone moving in the right direction.

Write Creatively Weekly

I spend time writing creatively every week. I am passionate about it—not because it relates directly to my work in a daily way—but because it shapes the way I lead. When I step away from spreadsheets and strategy meetings and start creating poems or short stories, I engage another area of my brain, one that needs metaphor and story rather than logical analysis.

It keeps my brain nimble and creative, allowing for innovation and compassion, two essential attributes in leadership. It also helps me to express myself, as telling stories helps me express my ideas more realistically. Bringing this entrepreneurial mindset back to my leadership is a way for me to not only enhance the way I interact with my team, but also how I solve problems, to be a more balanced leader. It’s not a particularly intuitive practice when it comes to fostering better business leadership, but it does prove valuable to my performance and the well-being of our culture.

Express Gratitude Regularly

A habit that significantly enhanced my leadership effectiveness is making a deliberate effort to express gratitude regularly. I take the time to acknowledge and thank each team member for their contributions personally. Whether it’s a handwritten note or a face-to-face conversation, I focus on recognizing specific achievements and efforts. For example, if a team member has successfully managed a complex case or implemented an innovative approach, I highlight these accomplishments and convey my appreciation directly.

The impact of this practice extends beyond just making team members feel good. I foster a positive and supportive work environment by regularly acknowledging their hard work. It creates a culture where everyone feels valued and understood, which can lead to increased job satisfaction and a stronger sense of belonging within the team. This acknowledgment also helps to reinforce the behaviors and efforts that align with our firm’s values and goals.

Practice Active Listening

Active listening is essential at our law firm, where we handle highly-sensitive and emotionally-charged cases. Being an attentive and empathetic listener enables me to truly understand the needs and experiences of both our clients and team members.

I am able to connect with survivors in a meaningful way, ensuring they feel heard and validated during one of the most vulnerable times of their lives. For my team, it creates an environment where they feel supported, respected, and encouraged to share their insights or concerns. This leads to stronger collaboration and a more resilient work culture. It’s not just about hearing words; it’s about understanding the emotions and motivations behind them. This has made me a more thoughtful leader and helped our firm achieve greater success by staying attuned to the people we serve.

Stay Hands-On with Work

One habit that I believe contributes to my effectiveness as a leader is staying consistently hands-on with the work. I have been involved in the tree service industry since I was a kid, and being out there with my team, getting my hands dirty, helps me understand the challenges they face and gain their respect. It also allows me to ensure the quality of our services firsthand. This direct involvement builds trust within the team and with our clients. Leading by example sets the tone for the entire company.

Set Aside Bias and Ego

Knowing when to set aside my bias and ego. Leading a company often feels like a battle. I want to live up to my dream and achieve the company vision with a team focused on its own visions. External factors come into play and make it more complicated. However, I know when to set aside my biases and ego to make decisions that lead the team in the right direction. I know when to push back and when to level up with people.

For example, I would push back if the marketing team suggested a strategy that relied on a short-lived social media trend. I would use data and past experiences to explain why I am not for the idea and give them alternative strategies to consider. However, pushing too hard can demoralize the team or interfere with their creativity. Knowing how to balance the two makes me a better leader. I get to keep the team motivated as I make objective business decisions.

Lead with Integrity

For me, integrity is not just a habit but a core principle that guides everything I do—both in business and in my personal life. Whether I’m interacting with clients, vendors, or even family and friends, I constantly ask myself a simple question: “If this proposal or decision were made to me, would it be acceptable, and would I move forward with it?” If I feel any hesitation, I know it’s time to adjust my approach.

This mindset ensures that the intent behind every decision I make is mutually beneficial. It’s not just about closing deals or achieving business goals; it’s about creating relationships and outcomes built on trust and respect. Integrity shapes my proposals, conversations, and actions, and it has a direct impact on how I lead my businesses and personal life.

In the long run, making decisions with integrity leads to better outcomes for everyone involved. It ensures that I’m not just pushing forward with what benefits me but considering what benefits others as well. I find that this builds stronger, more trusting relationships, both in business and in life. Ultimately, integrity allows me to lead with purpose and effectiveness, knowing that my actions align with my values and are in the best interest of everyone involved, fostering long-term growth and mutual success.

Thoroughly Prepare for Projects

I think that the secret to my successful leadership is preparation. I can provide clear direction and expectations to my team by thoroughly planning every part of a project or assignment. Because they are aware of exactly what is expected of them and how to handle potential obstacles, they can execute more successfully and efficiently. Proactive planning also helps me manage my staff more efficiently, which lowers stress and boosts output all around.

Build Strong Customer Relationships

One thing that has improved my effectiveness as a leader in the HVAC industry is my focus on building strong customer relationships. I firmly believe that understanding our clients’ needs is crucial for providing exceptional service, so I prioritize direct engagement with customers on a regular basis. This commitment goes beyond just addressing immediate concerns; it’s about forming a genuine connection that fosters trust and loyalty.

I actively participate in community-sponsorship programs, which allows me to meet potential clients in informal settings and learn about their experiences and expectations in a relaxed atmosphere. Whether sponsoring local sports teams or community events, these interactions provide valuable insights into what our clients care about most. Getting involved in the community allows us to showcase our company’s commitment to local values and also gain a better understanding of how we can serve our customers effectively.

Intentionally Expose Yourself to Discomfort

Every day, I make it a habit to intentionally expose myself to discomfort. That might sound counterintuitive, but stepping out of the familiar is how I stay sharp and avoid falling into patterns that might keep me from growing as a leader. Whether it’s listening to viewpoints that challenge my own or jumping into a project that pushes me into unfamiliar territory, I look for ways to keep that edge. It could be as simple as spending time understanding an entirely different industry or taking a risk with a creative strategy that isn’t the “safe bet.” This discomfort forces me to adapt, reflect, and be open to ideas that might not seem obvious at first glance.

Digital Detox Destinations: 8 Travel Experts Share their Top Picks

by EliteWebsite October 7, 2024
written by EliteWebsite

We asked CEOs and travel experts to share their top picks for a luxurious digital detox. From embracing tropical Costa Rica to exploring ecotourism in Iceland, here are eight recommendations for your next getaway.

  • Embrace Tropical Costa Rica
  • Find Seclusion in the Maldives
  • Seek Serenity at Amanpulo
  • Disconnect at the Ladera Resort
  • Find Peace in Bhutan
  • Reconnect at La Bastide
  • Unwind at the Bison Lodge
  • Explore Ecotourism in Iceland

Embrace Tropical Costa Rica

Costa Rica is one of the best places in the world for a digital detox due to its warm, tropical weather, friendly culture, and intoxicating natural beauty.

One of the first things you’ll notice about Costa Rica when you step out of the airport is the warm, tropical weather. When you wake up on your first full day in Costa Rica, you’ll almost assuredly be greeted with sunshine and the sound of singing birds (or howler monkeys if you are along the coast). Being just nine degrees north of the equator, the sun rises at 5:30 AM and sets between 5:30-6 PM every day, which makes creating a new sleep schedule and new habits much easier.

In order to disrupt the addiction we have to our screens, you need to occupy your brain with something else, and Costa Rica offers something for everyone. For the health-focused, yoga studios and even full yoga retreats are widely available. Spas are available in every major city and beach town. With 20% of the country preserved in national parks and wildlife refuges, there are endless opportunities to immerse yourself in nature with long hikes. Of course, taking long walks on the beach costs you nothing and can be done over and over again. For those needing an adrenaline fix, Costa Rica offers mountain biking, ATVs, white-water rafting, and sport fishing.

Last but not least, trying to make it through a personal challenge is always easier with help or a community. One of the reasons Costa Rica has risen to be a tourism juggernaut is due to the friendly, local culture. Costa Ricans, or “Ticos,” as they affectionately call themselves, are very proud of their country and are eager to share it with you. With a highly educated population, it is easy to make genuine friends here as well. Falling in love with the natural beauty and appreciating tropical weather is part of what makes a great experience, but having a community of local friends makes it feel like home.

Find Seclusion in the Maldives

If you’re looking for the ultimate luxury travel destination for a digital detox, I’d say head straight to the Maldives. This place is the epitome of “get away from it all” luxury.

Picture this: private over-water villas, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and pristine beaches that practically beg you to toss your phone aside. Most of the resorts in the Maldives even offer packages designed specifically for digital detoxing. You can enjoy spa treatments, yoga sessions, and dig into meals with the freshest seafood, all without the distraction of screens. The Wi-Fi might be great, but honestly, once you take in those sunsets, you won’t even miss your devices. Plus, the remoteness of the islands makes it easy to disconnect and fully immerse yourself in the stunning surroundings. It offers luxury with a side of peaceful seclusion!

Seek Serenity at Amanpulo

One of the best luxury travel destinations for a digital detox is Amanpulo, a private-island resort in the Philippines. Tucked away on the pristine island of Pamalican, this secluded paradise offers the ultimate escape from the digital world, allowing guests to disconnect and immerse themselves in nature. With no distractions from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, Amanpulo provides an unparalleled sense of tranquility and privacy.

What makes Amanpulo particularly ideal for a digital detox is its emphasis on wellness and rejuvenation. The resort’s luxurious villas and casitas are nestled along white-sandy beaches or in the lush hills, providing breathtaking views of the ocean and surrounding greenery. Without the constant buzz of technology, you can fully unwind and enjoy activities such as snorkeling in crystal-clear waters, exploring the island by bike, or indulging in personalized spa treatments.

The absence of Wi-Fi in certain areas encourages you to leave your devices behind and truly connect with your surroundings. The serene atmosphere, combined with Amanpulo’s attentive service, ensures a rejuvenating experience that allows you to recharge both mentally and physically. For those looking to escape the digital world and find peace in nature, Amanpulo offers the perfect blend of luxury, privacy, and serenity.

Disconnect at the Ladera Resort

The best luxury travel destination for a digital detox is Ladera Resort in St. Lucia. Nestled between the iconic Pitons, Ladera offers a rustic-yet-luxurious experience, perfect for those seeking a true escape from the digital world. Ladera’s open-air concept sets it apart; the suites have no fourth wall, providing an uninterrupted connection to nature while maintaining complete privacy. Without televisions or the distractions of modern technology, it becomes a private retreat where you can truly disconnect and immerse yourself in the beauty around you.

Ladera’s authenticity and simplicity are essential to its charm. Using natural materials like stone and hardwood, the resort’s design blends seamlessly with the stunning natural surroundings. The breathtaking views of the Pitons and the Caribbean Sea are front and center, reminding you at every turn why you’re here—to relax, unwind, and leave the digital world behind.

During our stay, we made it a point to embrace the resort’s “disconnect to reconnect” philosophy. We brought our snacks and wine, allowing us to indulge in quiet evenings on our private deck. Each suite has a plunge pool, providing a serene space to soak up the sun and enjoy the views without interruption. Our days were spent exploring nearby trails, hiking, and occasionally venturing out for meals, but for the most part, we stayed in our tranquil hideaway.

Ladera strikes the perfect balance for a digital detox: It offers a sense of seclusion without feeling completely isolated. You’re close enough to St. Lucia’s tourist spots to explore, but the resort itself feels like a world apart. This unique blend of luxury, nature, and solitude makes it the ideal destination for those looking to unplug and recharge.

I recommend Ladera because it’s all about the experience of letting go—letting go of screens, schedules, and constant connectivity. The resort’s open-air, wall-free suites allow you to fully embrace the natural beauty around you, creating an unmatched sense of freedom and peace. It’s a luxury retreat designed not just for relaxation but for rediscovering the joy of being present in the moment.

Find Peace in Bhutan

One of the most memorable places I’ve visited for a true digital detox is Bhutan. This small Himalayan kingdom completely captured my heart, and it’s where I recommend anyone go when they’re serious about unplugging. The best part about Bhutan is how effortlessly it lets you leave the chaos of daily life behind.

When I first arrived, I remember being struck by the peaceful, untouched nature of the landscapes. Everywhere you look, it’s just lush green valleys, towering mountains, and ancient monasteries clinging to the cliffs. It feels like time slows down here, and that’s a luxury in itself. The luxury lodges, like Six Senses and Amankora, blend seamlessly into this natural beauty, offering a high-end, yet serene escape. I stayed at a few of these lodges, and what I loved most was how they encouraged guests to disconnect—limited Wi-Fi, no TVs in rooms, and instead, meditation sessions, forest hikes, and spa treatments.

One thing I found fascinating is how Bhutan’s focus on Gross National Happiness really sets the tone for your stay. The people there live in such a mindful, contented way that you can’t help but feel more grounded yourself. After a few days of wandering through monasteries like Tiger’s Nest and waking up to the sound of the wind in the trees, I found myself completely forgetting about my phone. I wasn’t checking emails or scrolling through social media—I was just there, in the moment.

Another reason Bhutan is so perfect for a digital detox is the limited connectivity. Wi-Fi is sparse and slow, which at first might feel frustrating but quickly becomes liberating. You stop feeling that urge to check your phone because there’s no signal—just you and the beauty around you. And instead of losing yourself in your screen, you lose yourself in the culture, the people, and the incredible nature that surrounds you.

If you’re looking for a place where you can truly unwind, reconnect with nature, and let go of the distractions of modern life, Bhutan is absolutely the destination I’d recommend. It’s one of the few places I’ve been where I felt a true sense of peace, both externally and within myself.

Reconnect at La Bastide

For a luxurious digital detox, I can’t recommend La Bastide de Gordes highly enough. Perched atop a cliff in the picturesque village of Gordes in Provence, this 18th-century manor-turned five-star hotel offers an idyllic escape from the connected world.

What makes La Bastide special is its ability to immerse you in the rhythms of Provençal life. I found myself naturally disconnecting, drawn instead to the hotel’s tiered gardens overlooking the Luberon Valley. The infinity pool, with its panoramic views, became my new favorite “screen.”

The hotel’s Sisley spa, with treatments inspired by local herbs and traditions, offers a sensory alternative to digital stimulation. And the Michelin-starred restaurant, where each meal feels like a celebration of Provence, gives you a perfect excuse to linger over conversation rather than your phone.

Whether you’re exploring nearby lavender fields, taking a watercolor class in the village, or simply losing yourself in a book on your private terrace, La Bastide de Gordes reminds you of life’s analog pleasures. It’s a place where luxury means having the time and space to reconnect with yourself and your surroundings.

Unwind at the Bison Lodge

I have a hidden gem for you that offers the perfect blend of opulent comfort and natural serenity, making it an ideal retreat for those looking to disconnect from the digital world, and reconnect with themselves and nature.

Nestled in the heart of the Columbia Mountains, Bison Lodge Revelstoke provides a stunning backdrop for your digital-detox journey. The lodge’s architecture seamlessly integrates with its surroundings, featuring floor-to-ceiling windows that frame breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks and lush forests. This immersive natural setting instantly encourages guests to put down their devices and soak in the awe-inspiring beauty around them.

What sets Bison Lodge apart is its commitment to providing a luxurious experience while fostering a genuine connection with nature. The lodge offers spacious, well-appointed suites with premium amenities, ensuring comfort without the distraction of unnecessary technology. Instead of TVs and constant Wi-Fi connectivity, guests are encouraged to engage with their environment through various outdoor activities.

In summer, visitors can explore hiking trails, go mountain biking, or try their hand at fly fishing in crystal-clear lakes. Winter transforms the landscape into a snowy wonderland perfect for skiing, snowshoeing, and even heli-skiing for the more adventurous. These activities not only provide exhilarating experiences but also help guests rediscover the joy of being present in the moment, free from digital distractions.

To complement the natural-detox experience, Bison Lodge has partnered with Amala, Revelstoke’s premier mobile wellness company, to offer guests exclusive access to rejuvenating services. Amala’s expert practitioners bring their services directly to the lodge, allowing guests to indulge in luxurious treatments without leaving the serene environment. Imagine starting your day with a private yoga session on the deck overlooking the mountains, and in the afternoon, returning to the lodge for a deeply relaxing massage by Amala’s skilled therapists.

The absence of digital devices fosters genuine connections among guests and staff, creating a warm, family atmosphere that’s often lost in our hyper-connected world. With its stunning natural setting, coupled with world-class amenities and Amala’s bespoke wellness services, Bison Lodge creates the perfect environment for guests to unplug, unwind, and rediscover the joys of a life less digital.

Ecotourism is the ultimate luxury experience, as it brings travelers access to experiences that not only align with their thirst for adventure but with their values. It brings people closer to the planet, and that’s the most ideal positioning there is. From regenerative safari lodges to biophilic treehouse retreats to Arctic dining, I’m seeing players in the hospitality space embrace ecotourism in swaths, and these moments are ideal for digital detoxes.

Places like Iceland and Norway are fantastic for those wanting to escape their screens and connect with the wild, as they offer plenty of outdoor adventures and locally run luxury stays. Otherwise, Brazil will always be my favorite place for offline travel. I lived there for six months without a phone, social media, or really any technology, and there was so much to do. The country is getting a lot of attention in the luxury space lately, and high-end hospitality companies are converging on classic destinations like Rio, embracing the romance of the mid-century tourism wave that hit the city 70 years ago.

Others are turning to lesser-known gems, which I appreciate. I’m excited to see more luxury play in the Northeast and Southeast coasts of the country, but there are plenty of local resorts that offer amazing luxury experiences to visitors. Come and soak up the lush jungles, sparkling seas, plentiful fruits, and unbeatable sunrises.

written by EliteWebsite

We asked ten CEOs and founders which video creation tool they use to engage their audience and why they recommend it. From CapCut transitions to high-end cameras, discover why these tools are the top choices for creating engaging video content.

CapCut Transitions Keep Viewers Engaged

I use the Transitions feature in CapCut because it’s a free app that offers a wide range of functions. Transitions are crucial in video editing, as they create pattern interruptions that help maintain viewer interest for longer periods. In a world where attention spans are short, effectively using transitions is essential to keep the audience engaged.

Smartphone Basics Drive Conversions

As CEO of Business Builders, I regularly use video to engage our audience and promote our marketing services. Specifically, short case study videos featuring satisfied clients have been hugely impactful. For example, after posting a 60-second video testimonial from a client discussing how we increased their traffic 37% and sales inquiries 45% in three months, we saw a spike in inbound leads and new clients.

For marketing agencies, social proof is key. Nothing is more compelling than hearing directly from a real business owner how our work impacted their key metrics. We keep these videos raw and unscripted, filming with an iPhone and editing lightly. The transparency and authenticity resonate far more than overly polished corporate videos.

The strategy is simple: Achieve real results for clients, then make their stories the centerpiece of your marketing. Production quality matters, but don’t over-edit. Let clients share their experiences openly and honestly. When potential customers see others finding success, they’ll come knocking. As CEO of Business Builders, I rely on video to engage my audience. I highly recommend using simple tools like your phone camera, as that’s all you really need to start.

For example, I created a video on “The Top Marketing Tool for 2020” using just my phone. In under 90 seconds, I explained how anyone can leverage the power of video for their business—and the response was huge. It received over 50,000 views and 300 shares across platforms.

Video allows you to connect with your audience on an emotional level through storytelling. Keep your videos short, around 60–90 seconds, focus on one key message, and share them everywhere. I share videos on my website, social media, email newsletters, and even at events.

The best part is, it’s free. Anyone can start creating great content with what’s already in their pocket. Don’t worry about high production quality; just start recording and sharing your knowledge. Your audience will appreciate your authenticity.

Camtasia Creates Engaging Product Demo Videos

As the founder of Magnetik, a digital marketing agency, I recommend using a tool like Camtasia to create short explainer or product demo videos. Camtasia is easy to use but produces high-quality results.

For example, when Persado, an AI copywriting platform, hired us to build their new website, we created a series of short videos showing how their product worked. The videos helped visitors quickly understand Persado’s value and drove a 23% increase in demo requests.

Video is a powerful way to engage your audience and build trust in your brand. You don’t need expensive equipment or filming experience. Camtasia’s user-friendly interface means you can create impactful videos in-house. Keep your videos under two minutes, focus on how you solve customer problems, and add text overlays and music to bring them to life.

Sharing video on your website, social media, and email campaigns is a proven way to boost traffic, leads, and revenue. For us, Camtasia is an accessible tool that allows us to add video to our digital marketing strategies and achieve real results for clients.

ScreenFlow Creates Effective Client Testimonials

As the owner of a construction company, I’ve found that short video testimonials from satisfied clients are extremely effective for engaging new prospects. I use ScreenFlow, a simple but versatile screen recording and video editing tool, to create these client stories.

After completing a project, I’ll ask the homeowner if they’d be willing to provide a 30-second video testimonial on their experience working with us. I find that brief, authentic customer reviews are very compelling. ScreenFlow makes it easy to capture these testimonials, edit them, and share them on our website and social media.

For a recent roof installation, the homeowners were thrilled with their new roof’s performance and appearance. They raved on camera about our attention to detail, high-quality work, and dedication to minimizing disruption. This video has directly led to several new roofing consultation requests from people who saw the passion in that customer’s voice.

While fancy effects aren’t needed, a personal customer story achieves a level of credibility and trust that a written review alone does not. For any local business, I highly recommend reaching out to happy customers and asking them to share their experience on camera. With an easy tool like ScreenFlow, you’ll be creating persuasive video content in no time.

High-End Cameras Capture Engaging Stories

We use high-end, cinema-grade cameras to capture content, such as the Canon C500 II, C70, and even, on occasion, the ARRI Alexa 35. We use these tools in conjunction with various lighting and sound equipment to showcase a brand in the best possible way.

We then use Apple’s Final Cut Pro for editing content, with assistance from tools such as Adobe Photoshop, Runway AI, Canva, and others, to pull together a final product that speaks to our customers’ target market.

More importantly, we focus on the story behind each piece of content rather than the tools. This is by far the most important point, as without an engaging story, the tools you use won’t matter.

10 Must-Pack Travel Items Beyond the Essentials

by EliteWebsite October 4, 2024
written by EliteWebsite

Whether you’re taking off on a day trip or going away for weeks on end, you’re likely packing something. For just about all of us, we’re taking things like IDs (passports), phones, credit cards, toiletries, and the like. It would be pretty silly to leave those at home—they’re essential to getting around. Beyond those, what are the must-pack travel items?

When it comes to perfecting the art of packing for travel, Wacky Travel has gathered sage advice from ten seasoned travelers. From the necessity of a power bank to the practicality of packing cubes and seasonal gear for Ireland, check out the unique items these experts never leave behind.

  • Always Pack a Power Bank
  • Bring Your Own Pillow
  • Neck Pillow for Restful Travel
  • Back Support and Pain Relief Essentials
  • Cashmere Blanket for Comfort
  • Journal for Reflection and Memories
  • Organizational Packing Cubes and Fan
  • Universal Adapters for Device Charging
  • Packing Cubes and Seasonal Gear for Ireland
  • Unconventional Items for Smart Packing

Always Pack a Power Bank

When I travel, the portable power bank is one item I always ensure to pack. This is because running a business on the move requires a reliable alternative for charging accessories such as a mobile phone, tablet, or laptop. It means that carrying along the power bank will enable me to be in touch, tackle emergencies, and obtain vital information even if I’m traveling or in places where there are not enough sources of power. This little tool makes my trips more enjoyable and productive.

Khurram Mir, Founder, Kualitee

Bring Your Own Pillow

This might sound unconventional, but I pack my cervical pillow and a few pillow covers. That’s the only pillow I sleep on, and as we know, sleep is fundamental for good health and overall well-being. It takes up one-quarter of my luggage, but I’d rather have less space for clothes than more neck pain.

As for the extra pillow cover sets, call me particular, but I like to sleep on a fresh pillow cover every night. It’s not only a great feeling, but it also helps keep my skin looking its best.

Alessia Spampinato, Content Strategist, Italy Expert, AS

Neck Pillow for Restful Travel

My neck pillow is always with me when I travel. This might look trivial, but it is a game-changer during long trips. I learned that the hard way a few years ago when I had an extremely grueling journey.

From Vancouver to New Delhi, I flew on a plane with a long layover in San Francisco. After traversing the bustling airport, I found myself with several hours to kill before my next flight.

Exhausted and unable to find a comfortable spot in the crowded terminal, I pulled out my trusty neck pillow, hoping it would at least make the wait a bit more bearable.

I did not expect what happened next. In one of the corners, all wrapped up around my neck like some scarf, I fell fast asleep and was out cold as if nothing had happened.

This short nap was just enough for me to get energized for the other parts of the trip. When I eventually got on board for my flight, all thanks to this little pillow, I was refreshed and good to go.

Ever since then, I have never embarked on any journey without it. It doesn’t matter whether I am traveling by plane, train, or even waiting; if there is one thing that makes me rest comfortably wherever I’m at, it’s having a neck pillow.

In case you haven’t added a neck pillow to your travel set yet, you should consider doing so. This small purchase will significantly improve your comfort, especially during those long trips. You can believe me; your neck will be grateful!

Soubhik Chakrabarti, CEO, Icy Tales

Back Support and Pain Relief Essentials

Because my lower back occasionally goes out of alignment, a must-pack travel item is my 3M Futuro Adjustable Comfort Fit Back Compression Support, a.k.a. an elastic back brace.

In fact, last fall, we were in Moneglia, a small town near Cinque Terre. My wife “slept funny” and woke up one morning with severe back pain, so we had limited options for pain relief. She wrapped herself in my back brace and started limping towards a nearby pharmacy.

Fortunately, they stocked Voltaren Emulgel in the 2.32% formula, which is more than twice as strong as what you can buy in the U.S. After just a few days of using this extra-strength gel and wearing the brace, she was back to normal, so this is another must-pack travel item for us now.

Ironically, I had asked my doctor for a prescription for this stronger version of Voltaren just before we left for that month in Italy. CVS wanted $1,800 (not a typo) for a tube of it because it was not covered by my insurance, but it was only 17 Euros (approximately $19 U.S.) there.

Gil Zeimer, Travel Writer, Zeimer’s Advertising Shoppe

Cashmere Blanket for Comfort

I absolutely must have my cashmere blanket with me. I bought this warm, cozy, and light blanket in Kathmandu, Nepal. It has traveled with me to 16 countries since I purchased it in 2018.

You’ll discover, as you travel, that you want to be warm on cold flights, and those plane blankets are not good enough. Or clean, either.

If you’re feeling cozy on the plane or at your hotel or apartment, you’ll sleep better! Take it from me, who has traveled and lived in 34 countries.

Mary Bartnikowski, Award Winning Photographer, Author, and Retreat Leader, Mary Bartnikowski

Journal for Reflection and Memories

Traveling often forces us to confront what truly matters, both in our luggage and in life. The one item I always make sure to pack when I travel is my journal. At 62, having navigated the challenges of breast cancer and a stroke, I’ve learned that the most important item to pack is not a gadget or a piece of clothing but the importance of reflection and self-expression.

When I travel, my journal becomes a safe space where I can document my thoughts, feelings, and the lessons I’ve learned along the way. It’s a way to process my journey and celebrate the small victories. Each page holds memories of laughter, struggles, and the beauty of resilience.

Writing helps me stay grounded, especially during times of uncertainty. And let’s not forget the joy of coming home to my kitten, who reminds me daily of the simple pleasures in life. Of course, I bring the essentials: physical items, my phone, and medications.

Franne McNeal, President, Significant Business Results LLC

Organizational Packing Cubes and Fan

Among the things that my husband and I always pack when we travel, which we have grown to not be able to live without, are our packing cubes to stay organized on the go and a handheld motorized fan if we’re traveling somewhere warm. They’re must-haves for improved travel experiences.

Mikkel Woodruff, Co-owner and Editor, Sometimes Sailing

Universal Adapters for Device Charging

In my travels, I always ensure I carry universal adapters. It is a very simple object, yet it is very important to me because it allows me to charge my gadgets at any particular location possible. As much as it may sound cliché, the ability to safely charge a device during travel and avoid the stress of not being able to use electronics is important.

Mohd Rizwan, Director, Travelosei

Packing Cubes and Seasonal Gear for Ireland

Packing cubes are a must-have for me wherever I travel in the world. They’re also one of the tips I like to give my followers when they plan on traveling to Ireland, whether it’s for the first time or they are returning to the Emerald Isle after multiple trips there. Specific to Ireland, I’d also recommend packing a light rain jacket for spring and summer travel, along with something heavier for the fall and winter seasons. Packing clothing that can be layered is essential for those who intend to visit Ireland, where the weather tends to change multiple times a day.

Colette Connolly, Founder, Ireland on a Budget

Unconventional Items for Smart Packing

When I travel, which is frequently worldwide, I pack several unconventional items alongside the essentials. Beyond my phone and medications, a critical inclusion is laundry soap sheets from Earth Breeze. These compact, mess-free sheets are versatile and perfect for doing laundry or cleaning sneakers on the go.

Another essential in my travel kit is a clean water filter bottle. Having learned the hard way, I ensure access to safe drinking water to avoid illnesses from parasites or contaminants, especially when visiting different countries. Additionally, I always carry my passport for immediate emergency access. Many travelers leave their passports in a hotel safe, but in an urgent situation, what good is your passport if it’s locked away? I also keep a copy in my suitcase as a backup.

My packing list also includes items that might seem more suited to an adventure expedition than a vacation: a Swiss Army knife, a small handheld fan, a flashlight, and a solar-powered external battery charger. While this might seem like over-preparation, these tools have proven invaluable in unexpected situations, turning potential hassles into manageable incidents.

Packing smart isn’t just about remembering the essentials. It’s about anticipating potential needs and ensuring comfort, safety, and convenience, no matter where your travels take you. This approach has significantly enhanced my travel experiences, allowing me to navigate from minor inconveniences to more severe challenges quickly and confidently.

Surprise: Mexico Enforcing Costly Taxes on Personal Devices

by EliteWebsite October 1, 2024
written by EliteWebsite

Recent visitors to Mexico are coming back with more than just sunburns and serapes. They’re also coming back with tales of being held up at Mexico customs by officers intent on enforcing rules that impose harsh taxes on visitors with more electronic devices than the government deems necessary.

News accounts are popping up about tourists facing hefty fines for bringing in too many laptops, iPads and similar devices. Some say they’ve been forced to pony up hundreds of dollars to get through customs on arrival.

The law states travellers face taxes of up to 19% of the deemed value of the device. But “deemed value” can be one thing to a visitor and something else entirely to a customs officer, and travel forum websites are filled with stories of people who feel they got hosed.

In a recent story at USA Today, it was reported that Florida-based travel advisor Tammy Levent brought her laptop and iPad through CUN and had to pay almost USD$200 in fines.

Levent is owner of Elite Travel Management Group and visits the Riviera Maya several times a year for work, often bringing new agents with her for training.

She told the publication that when she arrived at CUN for a recent trip, a border agent pulled out her laptop and an older iPad and told her “You can’t have both.” Levent said she’s always brought these devices with her before, and that it was never an issue.

In a story at Riviera Maya News, David Ortiz Mena, President of the Tulum Hotel Association, said it’s “incredible” that customs officers are hitting tourists with fines at a time when local authorities are trying to lure more visitors to the region.

“At the end of the day, you want tourism but you’re driving people away,” she said. “You have huge companies like pharmaceutical companies… (bringing groups in) and they’re coming with laptops and iPads.”

Forbes recently posted a story that says this is “happening to tourists everyday, especially at CUN, Mexico’s largest airport.”

A writer for Forbes said a friend arrived at CUN recently. A customs agent searched her bag and found an iPad and MacBook Pro, then demanded she pay 3,690 Mexican pesos (about USD$190 or CAD$255) in duty for the laptop “or kiss it goodbye.”

“This has actually been in effect for a very, very long time,” Michael Boguslavskiy, a travel agent for Caballeros Vacations who specializes in Cancun trips, told USA TODAY. “It was never strongly enforced but now they are enforcing it worse than they ever have before.”

One alleged victim on Reddit said he arrived at CUN with a camera and three lenses and was forced to pay USD$200 in taxes for two more lenses than he was allowed. And that was after negotiating the original fine to a smaller amount.

Some 35,000 people fly into CUN every day. If the government hit just one per cent of those visitors with a fine of USD$200 if would mean USD$25 million a year, and that’s just for one airport.

The Mexican government’s website has a long list of items that people can bring in without paying taxes, whether items or new or second-hand. For electronics, this is what the site says is allowed: Two cameras or camcorders and camera gear; three cellphones or other wireless devices; one GPS; one electronic organizer; one laptop, notebook, omnibook or other portable computing device; one portable copier or printer; one CD burner and one portable overhead projector and its accessories.

There are tons of other limits, including four fishing rods, two musical instruments and their accessories, ten DVD’s, 30 CD’s, one pair of binoculars, and five toys, including collectibles, one videogame console and five videogames (be careful if you have kids).

On top of everything else, the language is clearly outdated. Who even owns a CD burner? And who, other than snowbirds who drive to Mexico, would take 30 CD’s or ten DVD’s?

Visitors to Cancun fined for bringing too many personal devices

by EliteWebsite September 25, 2024
written by EliteWebsite

Mexican airport officials are cracking down on imports of consumer electronics, including visitors’ personal laptops and tablets, tourists to the country say.

Reports in USA Today and Forbes detail a number of recent travel experiences where visitors arriving at Cancun International Airport have been confronted by customs agents over the number of personal electronic devices they are carrying.

More than one device could cost you

Unbeknownst to many arrivals in the Land of the Sun, Mexico operates under regulations that limit the number of portable computing devices each person can bring in. The rules are intended to prevent people bringing in goods and selling them on the black market. Just one “portable computer” is permitted per foreign arrival, and a laptop and tablet count as two devices.

The penalty? Either allow your least preferred device to be seized by Mexican customs, or in line with the country’s General Rules for Foreign Trade, under Baggage and Passenger Allowance, pay a fee representing 19% of the object’s value, up to $4,000. And beware: that’s 19% of the value it is deemed to have by a Mexican customs operative.

Tammy Levant, a writer for Elite Travel who spoke to USA Today about her border experience said she felt the customs official had over-estimated the value of her “older generation iPad”, which generated a larger fine for her to pay.

“Driving people away”

The rules are not new, but the general consensus among commentators seems to be that they are being applied more assiduously than before, particularly for arrivals at Cancun International, the country’s busiest hub which handles 500 daily flights and more than 13 million passengers a year.

Levant, owner of Elite Travel Management Group, has regularly visited Cancun two or three times a year, often training groups of colleagues, and had never been pulled aside by customs before. She pointed to the large numbers of professional conferences held in Mexico and suggested applying the tax on multiple devices would soon start “driving people away.”

Outdated rule “hurts Mexico’s image”

Meanwhile, a Cancun specialist travel agent Michael Boguslavskiy, said the rule “has actually been in effect for a very, very long time.” It also applies to items such as DVDs and cameras and was, in his words, “a massively outdated list at this point but it’s still there.”

But if Mexican stakeholders have their way, the rule might not be in force for much longer. Local news outlet Riviera Maya News spoke to the President of the Tulum Hotel Association, David Ortiz Mena, who acknowledged that remote working had generated a new kind of traveller who expects to be able to work across multiple devices.

“We will have to review this situation and the law to avoid this type of impact. There are already all kinds of comments on social media,” Ortiz Mena said. Saying the news coverage “hurts our image” he insisted, “If we want to be a tourist powerhouse, let us be consistent.”

You Could Be Fined for Bringing Too Many Electronic Devices Into This Country

by EliteWebsite September 24, 2024
written by EliteWebsite

For those of us who work online, vacation mode often means reduced or no screen time. That said, it’s rare for me not to travel with at least one laptop if not two — even if I’m on PTO. And I’ve never considered for a second (other than for my mental health) that this would be an issue. But this week, USA Today reported that a seasoned traveler named Tammy Levent was fined approximately $200 for possessing multiple electronic devices upon entry into Cancun International Airport.

Levent’s recent experience at Cancun aiport highlights a seemingly growing trend: the imposition of strict limitations on the number of electronic devices that can be brought into Mexico. This regulation, often unknown by visitors from the US, can result in significant fines.

According to Mexico’s General Rules for Foreign Trade, under the baggage allowance section, foreign arrivals are permitted to bring only one portable computer per person. This restriction applies to both laptops and tablets. Travelers who violate this rule may face taxes of up to 19 percent of the deemed value of the device, with a maximum value of $4,000. The law is designed to prevent the smuggling of electronic goods for resale and to discourage the establishment of personal electronics manufacturing facilities within Mexico.

But this is the first I’ve heard of it. I’ve been to Mexico a handful of times with either two laptops or a laptop and iPad and never had an issue. It was news to Levent, too. She has visited two to three times a year on work trips over the past decade and had never encountered this before.

“At the end of the day you want tourism but you’re driving people away,” Levent says to USA Today. “You have huge companies like pharmaceutical companies…(bringing bring groups in) and they’re coming with laptops and iPads.”

Cancun International Airport is the busiest airport in Mexico, serving over 13 million passengers annually. With such a large volume of travelers, it is likely that many are unaware of the electronic device restrictions. As a result, the airport has seen an uptick in the number of cases where travelers have been fined for possessing multiple devices says the Riviera Maya News.

Considering my personal experience traveling into Mexico, and specifically Cancun airport, it seems these checks and the follow-through with fines are happening at random. And that’s exactly what furious Levent claims, too. Levent has followed up this experience with a letter of complaint to Mexican officials. USA Today contacted Cancun Customs Administration for a statement, but at the time of publication, they have not had a response.

Although these regulations seem outdated, they are legal and travelers to Mexico should adhere to the one permitted electronic device rule to avoid the possibility of a fine.

Leave the laptop or tablet? Cancun Airport fines travelers bringing multiple devices

by EliteWebsite September 23, 2024
written by EliteWebsite

Key Points

  • Cancun International Airport is the busiest airport in Mexico with over 13 million passengers annually.
  • Mexican customs regulations only allows one portable computer per foreign arrival, including laptops and tablets.
  • Travelers who bring more than one device face taxes of up to 19% of the deemed value of up to $4,000 of the device.

This story was updated to correct a misspelling/typo.

Florida-based Tammy Levent never imagined that bringing her laptop and iPad through customs at Cancun International Airport for a work trip in June would result in an approximately $200 fine.

As an entrepreneur in the travel industry and owner of Elite Travel Management Group, Levent is no stranger to Cancun. For the last decade, she’s visited two to three times a year for work, often bringing neophyte travel agents with her for trainings.

When Levent arrived at the airport this time, she had two check-in suitcases and a carry-on with her. Passing through customs, she was flagged to one of the tables where her luggage was examined by an agent. The agent pulled out her iPad and laptop, telling her, “You can’t have both,” she recounted to USA TODAY. She said she’s always brought these devices with her before, and this was the first time it was an issue.

As the gateway to Mexico’s most visited city, Cancun International Airport is also the busiest airport in the country with over 13 million passengers annually and 500 daily flights.

Unlike in the U.S., where there’s no limit on how many laptops you can fly with, many of these passengers may not know that Mexican customs regulations only allow one portable computer per foreign arrival, including laptops and tablets. Otherwise, travelers face taxes of up to 19% of the deemed value of up to $4,000 of the device, according to the country’s General Rules for Foreign Trade, under Baggage and Passenger Allowance.

Levent said her older generation iPad was considered worth much more than it really is by the agent, making her fine higher than she felt was fair. “This was wrong,” she said about her experience.

“At the end of the day, you want tourism but you’re driving people away,” Levent said. “You have huge companies like pharmaceutical companies… (bringing bring groups in) and they’re coming with laptops and iPads.”

Why are travelers being fined for multiple electronic devices at Cancun Airport?

The law isn’t new. Travelers from abroad can bring “a portable computer equipment known as laptop, notebook, Omnibook or similar,” according to the Mexican Customs list. If passengers don’t pay the 19% tax on extra portable computers, they will be confiscated.

“This has actually been in effect for a very, very long time,” Michael Boguslavskiy, a travel agent for Caballeros Vacations who specializes in trips to Cancun, told USA TODAY. “It’s a massively outdated list at this point but it’s still there.” (For example, you can only bring in 10 DVDs, if people still travel with those.)

However, there’s been a recent uptick in customs actually implementing the law and charging tourists, according to the Riviera Maya News.

“It was never strongly enforced but now they are enforcing it worse than they ever have before,” Boguslavskiy said.

Cancun Customs Administration did not immediately respond to USA TODAY’s request for comment.

Boguslavskiy said some possible reasons could be due to an increase in passengers carrying multiple devices with the possible intention to sell them. “Obviously, that’s not the case with 99% of people bringing a laptop and an iPad, but it’s up to customs as they choose to view it,” he said. Or it could just be to increase tax revenue from the influx of visitors.

It’s also not the only way Mexican customs can feel like smoke and mirrors to travelers, according to Boguslavskiy. Only two cameras are allowed tax-free, and technically, cigarettes exceeding 10 packs can be fined or confiscated. Since there’s a duty-free store right before customs, people stock up on cheap tobacco thinking “it’s safe,” only to have it seized shortly after purchasing, he said.

Upset with her Cancun Airport experience, Levent sent complaint letters to Mexican officials. In a return letter from the Cancun Customs Administration, Levent was told the luggage inspections are done at random.

Boguslavskiy sends the customs list to all his clients heading to Mexico and advises every traveler going abroad to “please be up to date with what the local rules of customs are.”

Mexican Customs Agents Aren’t Scamming Tourists Cancun’s Airport, Import Taxes Are Real

by EliteWebsite September 22, 2024
written by EliteWebsite

Travelers can be taxed at the airport for bringing two portable computing devices into Mexico

Whether traveling for business or pleasure, most feel the need to remain tethered to the digital world in some capacity. Some travelers are discovering the hard way that Mexican customs agents in Cancun will tax them at the airport for bringing multiple electronic devices into the country. While tourists feel like they are suddenly being extorted, the law has always been on the books but just selectively enforced.

Mexico’s law only allows one portable computing device to be brought into the country tax-free. The levy can be up to 19 percent of the device’s value assessed by the agent. The headaches really begin when you dig into what’s defined as a portable device. Cell phones are in their own separate category, where you’re allowed three. However, tablets aren’t separated, so you can’t take both a MacBook and iPad into Mexico free of charge. This is what happened to Florida resident Tammy Levent. USA Today explained:

When Levent arrived at the airport this time, she had two check-in suitcases and a carry-on with her. Passing through customs, she was flagged to one of the tables where her luggage was examined by an agent. The agent pulled out her iPad and laptop, telling her, “You can’t have both,” she recounted to USA Today. She said she’s always brought these devices with her before, and this was the first time it was an issue.

Levent said her older generation iPad was considered worth much more than it really is by the agent, making her fine higher than she felt was fair. “This was wrong,” she said about her experience.

“At the end of the day you want tourism but you’re driving people away,” Levent said. “You have huge companies like pharmaceutical companies… (bringing bring groups in) and they’re coming with laptops and iPads.”

The rule is intended to prevent people from profiting from reselling merchandise. Agents can tax clothing, footwear, hygiene products and beauty products if you bring in more than what would likely be used during your stay. The custom law also covers a wide variety of technologies essentially dead in 2024. For example, travelers can bring five laser discs, 10 DVDs, and 30 CDs into Mexico tax-free.

I’m not going to argue for or against Mexico’s import laws, but I will state that you should be aware of any country’s rules when you plan on visiting. Don’t be like NASCAR driver Kyle Busch, who was detained at Cancun International Airport for bringing a handgun into the country last year.

B2B SaaS Influencer Success Story

We leveraged influencer marketing by partnering with well-known sales and marketing experts who have a strong presence in the B2B and SaaS communities. These influencers used our cold-email marketing tool in their workflows and shared their success stories through webinars, social media, and blogs. Their authentic testimonials and detailed case studies resonated with their followers, helping us build trust and credibility. This strategy not only drove a significant increase in product sign-ups but also positioned our tool as a must-have solution in the cold outreach space, aligning perfectly with our brand’s objective of expanding our market share.

Tech Product Launch via Influencers

One successful example of leveraging influencer marketing involved a campaign we executed to promote a new software product we developed. We identified key influencers in the tech and business sectors who had a strong following among our target audience—entrepreneurs and tech enthusiasts. We reached out to these influencers with a tailored pitch, highlighting how our product could benefit their followers.

The influencers created content that showcased our software’s unique features and benefits through reviews, tutorials, and case studies. This content was shared across their social media channels and blogs, reaching a highly engaged audience that trusted their recommendations. By providing the influencers with early access to the product and exclusive insights, we were able to generate buzz and credibility around our launch.

The campaign resulted in a significant increase in product visibility and user sign-ups. Moreover, the authentic endorsements from respected voices in the industry helped us build trust with potential customers and position our product as a leading solution in the market. This approach not only met our brand’s objectives of driving product awareness and engagement but also fostered valuable relationships within our industry.

Evergreen SEO-Driven Influencer Partnerships

At Rubix, we’ve taken a strategic approach to influencer marketing by leveraging high-intent search keywords. For example, we identified influencers ranking highly for terms like ‘best mattress for back pain’ on Google SERP and YouTube. These influencers aren’t just popular but are recognized as authoritative voices in their niche due to their strong search visibility.

By reaching out to these individuals, we were able to share our product’s value propositions and capitalize on the organic traffic they continue to receive. This approach ensures our influencer campaigns remain evergreen, as their content keeps driving traffic and conversions long after the initial collaboration. This combination of SEO-driven influencer marketing has allowed us to create partnerships that deliver sustained results over time.

Authentic Micro-Influencer Collaborations

When we were launching a major update to RecurPost, I identified a few micro-influencers in the social media management space who had a loyal following but weren’t overwhelmed with promotional content.

Rather than approaching them with a traditional sponsorship, I initiated a conversation about the specific pain points they faced in their workflows. This led to a collaborative effort where they tested our new features and provided genuine feedback, which we then used to refine the product before its official release.

Once the product was optimized, these influencers shared their experiences with their audiences, not as a paid promotion but as a genuine recommendation. This approach not only built credibility but also drove a significant increase in sign-ups during the launch period, proving the value of creating authentic relationships rather than transactional ones.

Legal Insights with Financial Influencer

While influencer marketing isn’t as common in the legal industry as in other sectors, we at Right Lawyers found a way to leverage it by collaborating with local community leaders and trusted voices in related fields. One particularly successful partnership was with a well-known financial advisor who had a large social media following. Given that divorce often involves complex financial decisions, this advisor regularly spoke to their audience about managing finances during major life transitions, including divorce.

We partnered with this influencer to create joint content, such as co-hosted webinars and social media videos, where the advisor discussed financial planning during a divorce, and we provided legal insights on topics like property division and alimony. Their followers trusted their advice, and our collaboration lent credibility to our expertise in the legal aspects of divorce.

This influencer marketing approach helped us reach a highly targeted audience that was already thinking about divorce-related issues. The content performed well on social media, generating meaningful engagement and driving traffic to our website. As a result, we saw an increase in client consultations from individuals who were influenced by the financial advisor’s endorsement of our services.

By aligning with someone trusted in a complementary field, we were able to extend our reach, build trust with potential clients, and meet our objectives of increasing brand awareness and driving qualified leads. This strategy showed us that influencer marketing can be effective, even in professional services, when it’s done in a thoughtful and relevant way.

Local Influencer Drives Floral Workshop Sales

Leveraging influencer marketing has been a fantastic way to meet my brand’s objectives, especially in the floral industry. Recently, I collaborated with a local lifestyle influencer who has a strong following in my area. We organized a floral arrangement workshop where she invited her followers to join and learn how to create their own bouquets.

The influencer shared her experience on social media, showcasing the beautiful arrangements created during the workshop. This not only increased my brand visibility but also drove traffic to my website, resulting in a significant uptick in sales for the featured flowers. The partnership allowed me to tap into her audience, build credibility, and foster a sense of community around my brand. Influencer marketing can be incredibly effective when you find the right partner who aligns with your brand values!

Authenticity Over Follower Count in Campaigns

We once partnered with a micro-influencer who had a loyal, engaged following in our niche. Rather than just having them promote our product, we worked with them to create authentic content that aligned with their personal brand and resonated with their audience. The key was finding an influencer whose values matched our own, so the collaboration felt natural. Through this campaign, we not only boosted brand awareness but also saw a noticeable increase in conversions. My advice: Focus on authenticity over follower count—it’s the real connection with their audience that makes influencer marketing effective.

Travel Venture Boosted by Influencer Match

Leveraging influencer marketing has proven to be a highly effective strategy in promoting my new venture, Blue Zone Experiences, an extension of my existing travel business. I identified and partnered with an influencer who perfectly aligned with the brand’s ethos and audience to uniquely position this venture.

Critical Steps in the Process:

1. Identifying the Right Influencer: Through careful research on Instagram, I found an influencer with a significant following of 500,000, a nomad visa holder living in Europe. Her lifestyle and audience were ideal matches for promoting Blue Zone travel experiences.

2. Strategic Partnership: I reached out to her and formed a partnership that benefits both parties. She gets to travel at minimal cost and earn money, while her endorsement helps fill my group trips more efficiently.

3. Mutual Benefits: This collaboration boosts my bookings and enhances her brand, providing her with valuable content and experiences to share with her audience.

This partnership illustrates the power of influencer marketing in reaching targeted demographics and achieving business objectives efficiently. By selecting an influencer whose followers align with our target market, we’ve managed to significantly increase the visibility and appeal of our travel packages. The influencer’s enthusiasm for promoting our product adds an authentic voice to our marketing efforts, making the promotional content more relatable and effective.

The success of this strategy has reinforced the importance of choosing the right partners and crafting mutually beneficial agreements in influencer marketing. This win-win scenario has led to increased bookings, wider brand recognition, and a stronger presence in the competitive travel market.
