Camping Trip Essentials

by Tammy Levent January 5, 2015
written by Tammy Levent

Camping in Bishop, CA

There is something truly special about camping and just living in nature for a little while. And with the trend of glamping (glamorous camping) growing in popularity, more and more people are hitting the road searching for adventure and their own pieces of heaven. Should you decide to go camping here are some things we highly suggest you bring with you:

Tent- The home base of your camp site is your tent. Sure, it is thinner than the walls of a building, but it can protect you from many of the elements.

Food- If you don’t plan on hunting for your supper, you will definitely need to bring something to eat along with you. Bring some water while you are at it and should you think you can just drink from the streams, make sure to bring some water filters or purification tablets too.

Sleeping bag and possibly an air mattress- Bringing an air mattress is becoming more of a requirement in the age of glamping and we will admit it’s a lot more comfortable than just sleeping on the hard ground.

Sunscreen- Enough said

Insect Repellent- Again, enough said.

Toiletries and towels- You’ve got to get clean sometime.

First- Aid Kit- When you are doing physical activities in nature splinters, bites and cuts are possible so bringing a first-aid kit is never a bad idea.

A stove or matches- Whether you want to build a fire or want to use a gas stove you’ll most likely need something for cooking. Why matches? Well, rubbing two sticks together to start a fire takes a lot longer than you may think and we prefer all the glory of the fire without all the work.

Mess kit- You’ll need something to cook your food in and a mess kit is a great all-in-one option that allows you too cook your food in the same container you will be eating out of. It’s a good idea to also bring utensils to cook and eat with.

Bring a chair- You’ll thank us for this suggestion when you are sitting around the fire in comfort instead of on the dirt.

What’s Happens After You Earn the Trip?

by Tammy Levent December 10, 2014
written by Tammy Levent

incentive travel november 2014Congratulations! You have worked hard and earned the incentive trip. Now, it’s time to get down to the business of planning the dream vacation you saved up all those travel points to take.

First, you need to take the time off from work. Put in your vacation request as soon as possible. For some employers you will need to request vacation weeks or months in advance especially if you plan on taking your trip around the holidays.

Second, decide where you want to go. Many of the companies we work with set up a list of destinations to choose from so contact us and let us know which trip you want to take. Side note- you may be able to pay extra for an extended stay. For example, if you earned a free three night stay but really want four or five nights we may be able to extend your stay for an additional fee. Should you want to extend your stay please let us know in the early stages of planning as making changes after booking is not always easy.

Third, book your flights if necessary and get your documents in order. If it’s an international trip you will need a passport and without paying an expedition fee a passport can take four to six weeks to obtain!

Next, it’s time to start packing. Look up the area’s weather reports for the time you will be there and pack accordingly. No one wants to be wearing shorts in 30 weather°, just like wearing a heavy jacket makes no sense when its 86° outside!

Be sure to pack a little extra cash too! Even though your trip might be an all-inclusive vacation it never hurts to have some buffer money for emergencies and incidentals.

Lastly, head to the airport and take your trip. Arrive early to avoid the risk of missing your flight due to unforeseen circumstances. Check in, hop on board and enjoy your travels knowing that you deserve this getaway.

Shark Diving

by Tammy Levent November 12, 2014
written by Tammy Levent

Great_white_shark_south_africa

Does that human look like lunch to you or are you still full from the one we had at breakfast? <- A little shark humor there! But seriously, have you ever wondered what sharks think when they encounter humans? Or do you just long to swim amongst these feared creatures? If you seek the chance to spend an afternoon with the beasts of the sea, shark diving may be for you.

There are many different places throughout the world that offer the chance to get up close and personal with sharks. Diving companies have set up shot in places such as Tahiti, Belize, Mexico, New York, California, the Florida Keys, the Bahamas, Fiji, Africa, Ecuador and more.

Some companies require that you be a certified diver (scuba dive tours), whereas others just require that you be able to swim (caged dives). What type of encounter are you looking for? If a company requires you be scuba certified they will require you show proof of certification, so make sure to check the requirements before you dive in.

Most caged dives feature a large cage big enough for between one and three people. You jump into the cage; you float and wait for your encounter. Scuba divers swim until they find the sharks.

The time of year and location you choose will determine what type of sharks you will see and how many you will see.

Scuba dives are the “riskier” form of swimming with sharks as there is nothing to protect you should an attack occur. However, many shark enthusiasts swear that swimming with sharks is generally not a risk at all.

Even with all of the people that jump in with sharks every year, there is only an average of 75 reported unprovoked attacks annually worldwide according to the International Shark Attack File of the Florida Museum of Natural History, University of Florida.

Of course, like famed sea-explorer Jacques Cousteau believed- one way to dissuade a shark attack is not to bleed and to get out of the water if someone is bleeding.

Are you ready to book your shark encounter? Call Elite Adventure Travel at 866-726-9090 today!

Hunting for a Great Vacation

by Tammy Levent October 27, 2014
written by Tammy Levent

Boy_hunter_watches_for_birds_coming

It’s early in the morning. You’re decked out in camouflage. All that surrounds you are the elements of nature. It’s quiet and serene and you’re on the prowl. You peer through the bushes and spot him. BAM! You’ve landed that glorious shot you have been dreaming about since you booked your flight here.

Does this sound like the vacation you have been searching for? If so, you’re in luck because Elite Adventure Travel has created a list of steps you can take for planning and executing the perfect hunting trip.

– Decide what kind of game you want to hunt. Is it birds, deer or something more exciting? Determining what you want to hunt can help narrow down the location you choose.

– Get your paperwork in order. Passports and permits may be required for your trip and some hunting permits will require tests and classes. The sooner you can get these taken care of, the better!

– Book the trip. Although it’s not always the case, the earlier you book your trip, the more money you can potentially save.

– Find out what you need to bring. Some hunting vacations include guides, guns and ammo, others don’t. Make a list of supplies you might need and gather them. If you need to transport a weapon, it would help to know how to legally do that.

– Research the area. Even if a guide is taking you on your trip, it never hurts to look up the spot you will be in to get an idea of the terrain’s topography and weather.

– Learn the laws. Some hunting spots will not allow you to take your kill with you or will require you have a separate permit for removal of the kill. Make sure you keep it legal and know all laws regarding your trip in advance.

– Plan your time. Some hunting trips require going in the wee hours of the morning, whereas others can be in the middle of the day or night.

– Travel to your destination. If possible check out the land the day before the hunt. If not spend the day before double checking your maps and equipment.

– Show up early and let the hunt begin!

If you are planning a trip seeking adventure, beauty and relaxation, Guanacaste, Costa Rica may be the triple threat you have been looking for. Guanacaste is one of the most popular provinces in Costa Rica with some of the prettiest beaches in the country. Tourists flock to the province annually to enjoy not only the pristine shoreline but beautiful mountain ranges, a number of volcanoes and near perfect weather year-round.

Adventure: Guanacaste offers so many options for things to do you will barely have a chance to get bored. Surfing, diving, ATV tours, zip lining, kayaking and horseback riding are just a few of the activities available, but the most popular activity for tourists is deep sea fishing.

There is nothing like the adrenaline rush that comes with deep sea fishing and the fishing off the coast of Guanacaste never disappoints. Catches that can be expected include Sailfish, Mahi-mahi, Marlin, Rooster fish and many others. Many fishermen have said that Guanacaste offers the best fishing in the world because of the great quantity of marine species in the water and the beauty of the surrounding area.

Relaxation: Whether you enjoy lying on the beach, walking through a gorgeous park or getting pampered in a spa, Guanacaste can accommodate you. The beaches feature 125 miles of white sand beaches, cool blue waters and some of the prettiest sunsets you could possibly imagine.

A calming walk through Guanacaste National Park offers some of the prettiest bird and wild life watching conditions around. The biodiversity of the park includes howler, capuchin, spider and white-faced monkeys, coatis, white-tailed deer and a plethora of bird species.

The spas of Guanacaste are also world class offering everything from soothing facials and tranquil massages to revitalizing body wraps and invigorating exfoliation treatments.

The Importance of Travel for Your Health

by Tammy Levent July 1, 2014
written by Tammy Levent

ICULooking for yet another reason to offer a travel incentive in your business? How about this one? Travel is good for the health of your employees! In fact, according to the BBC, “Workers who take time off are more productive, have higher morale and are less likely to mentally ‘check out’ on the job. They also report less stress and burnout.” Fox News also reported that men and women who vacation regularly are at less risk for heart disease or a heart attack.

So what is it about travel that benefits the health of your employees?

Travel makes you well-rounded as an individual. Learning about new cultures expands the mind thereby helping your mental health.

Travel helps your personal relationships. Giving your employees the chance to take a break from the daily grind and reconnect with their families helps their emotional and mental health.

Taking a break means resting and this helps your employees’ physical and mental health. No one can go non-stop 24/7 without eventually breaking down. Giving your employees a trip provides them a wonderful stress-free break.

Travel generally means being more active and being active can boost immunity.

Typically travel is a major goal for people and having the opportunity to cross certain destinations off of an employee’s bucket list benefits their mental health.

All the good feelings associated with travel carry over when the employee gets back to work. They come back mentally, emotionally and physically refreshed and excited about the prospect of working towards another vacation. The best part is if they took pictures on the trip they can use those to remember how good they felt on vacation recharging them throughout the time until their next trip.

Domestic Vs International for Your Incentive Travel Trips

by Tammy Levent June 17, 2014
written by Tammy Levent

Magnolia hotel in Sochi cityTrying to figure out where to send your employees for your next incentive travel trip? Here are some ideas that may help sway your decision:

Domestic options:

Just a few options for domestic trips include things like Las Vegas, Hawaii, Lake Tahoe, Florida and California. Domestic airfare can sometimes be cheaper and if your business is in the same state as the incentive trip you choose airfare might not even be an issue.

Imagine an incentive trip to Napa Valley or San Francisco. Arrange for your employees to dip their toes in the beaches of Florida or Hawaii. There’s always fun to be had in Las Vegas and Lake Tahoe offers a serene retreat. There are all inclusive resorts in the states and there are theme parks in several states to choose from. The possibilities of domestic trips are endless!

International Options:

If you insist on sending your employees out of the country, first be sure they have their passport! Sometimes you will get lucky and find that trips out of the country can be cheaper than domestic ones. Pricing and options depend on the season, the location and many other factors.

The most popular option for all-inclusive trips is the Caribbean. Check out our post about the benefits of choosing an all-inclusive resort. The Caribbean feels worlds away from the states even though it’s so close by. There are unique experiences with gorgeous views everywhere from Aruba to the Bahamas, Jamaica to Turks & Caicos.

All-inclusive resorts in Mexico are a popular option because of low cost flights and all-inclusive accommodations.

Another popular option is Europe but how wide you will need to open your wallet depends on the country you choose for the trip.

Remember, whether you decide to stay domestic or go international, Elite Travel will work with you to help you decide on the best option for your budget.

Incentive Trips and Tax Write-Offs

by Tammy Levent June 10, 2014
written by Tammy Levent

Analyzing_Financial_DataAfter deciding to give your employees incentive trips you may be wondering- What is tax deductible and what’s not? Below is just a glimpse of what you need to know about what is tax deductible regarding awarding trips and bonuses to employees.

Bonuses – You can generally deduct a bonus paid to an employee if you intended the bonus as additional pay for services, not as a gift, and the services were performed. However, the total bonuses, salaries, and other pay must be reasonable for the services performed.

Awards – You can generally deduct amounts you pay to your employees as awards, whether paid in cash or property. If you give property to an employee as an employee achievement award, your deduction may be limited.

Achievement awards – An achievement award is an item of tangible personal property that meets all the following requirements.

  • It is given to an employee for length of service or safety achievement.
  • It is awarded as part of a meaningful presentation.
  • It is awarded under conditions and circumstances that do not create a significant likelihood of disguised pay.

Deduction limit – Your deduction for the cost of employee achievement awards given to any one employee during the tax year is limited to the following.

  • $400 for awards that are not qualified plan awards.
  • $1,600 for all awards, whether or not qualified plan awards.

A qualified plan award is an achievement award given as part of an established written plan or program that does not favor highly compensated employees as to eligibility or benefits.

A highly compensated employee is an employee who meets either of the following tests.

  1. The employee was a 5% owner at any time during the year or the preceding year.
  2. The employee received more than $115,000 in pay for the preceding year.

Deduct achievement awards as a nonwage business expense on your return or business schedule.

Are you more confused now than you were before? When in doubt, ask your accountant!

You Didn’t Earn the Trip- Now What?

by Tammy Levent May 30, 2014
written by Tammy Levent

Crying-girlYour numbers are in and you didn’t meet the quota this time for your free incentive trip. Now you’re bummed out and trying to cope. Now what?

– Remember you can try again next time: Odds are you will have another chance to earn a free trip. Most companies that do incentives for trips realize they are so successful they offer more!

– Figure out what went wrong: You had the same chance everyone else did to make this quota. Assess why you didn’t meet your numbers. Did you procrastinate too much? Was your sales-pitch stale and/or in need of an upgrade? What will it take to help you earn the trip next time?

– Ask for help: If you have figured out something that cost you the trip that your coworkers or boss can help you with ASK!

– Don’t be a hater: One of the most important things is to not be jealous of and mean to your coworkers that did earn the trip. Again, you had the same chance they did. You would want them to be happy for you if you earned the trip so you should show them the same courtesy. It’s important to remember that being a hater could also get you on the boss man’s bad side and no one wants to be there.

– Keep in mind you still made money: Sure, it is unfortunate you didn’t earn a trip this time, but the good news is you were still making money. You still have a job. Not everyone can say that so be grateful for that at least.

– Fuming and pouting get you nowhere: Being upset won’t get you on that trip and it honestly won’t make you feel any better. In fact, being overly upset could cost you your job. If your boss doesn’t think you can roll with the punches you could end up with a pink slip instead of another chance to earn a trip. Just accept you missed out, let it go and gear up for round two!

Budget Your Incentives This Year to Get Ready for Next Year!

by Tammy April 4, 2014
written by Tammy

Calculator_casio

It’s not too early to start planning your incentives for the following year. With tax season and the second quarter at our doorstep, now may be the perfect time to prepare your plans for 2015.

All of your plans that are already in place for 2014 may be getting your employees amped up now, but letting them know you have plans to continue travel incentives in 2015 can help that momentum continue.

Now that you know how much money you could potentially bring in with increased sales, it’s important to set aside some of that money to pay for the incentives you have already promised to your employees. You can also look forward to how much money you need to bring in next year to offer the same or better incentives.

Ask employees how they feel this year’s incentives are going? Get input on what kind of travel incentives they would like to see in the future. For example, if you chose Jamaica this year, see if they would prefer Mexico next year. If you didn’t include excursions this year, see if that is a possibility for the next time around.

Getting the input of your employees allows them to feel like they have a say about the rewards they could potentially receive. Find out what’s working and what isn’t and see what they need from you to meet their sales quotas. Would extra training push them to the next level to bring in more sales?

Perhaps your incentives are going so well you need to expand your sales team. This is a great problem to have! Do you need to budget for new employees and additional trips now? It’s time to start thinking ahead and preparing for the future. Here’s hoping you will have an even more prosperous 2015!
