Cruising the Jewel of the Seas

by Tammy Levent March 4, 2015
written by Tammy Levent

Jewel of the Seas

At Elite Travel we sell all types of trips and one of the lesser known vacation packages we sell is cruises. In fact, cruises are one of our agents, Kay Skordilis, specializes in cruise. Check out what Grethlyn Orr who just came back from an amazing getaway on the Royal Caribbean’s Jewel of the Seas had to say about her trip, Kay and Elite:

I want to thank you and Elite travel for organizing such a memorable trip on board the Jewel of the Seas. The entire trip was well thought out and put together nicely. We did not have to think of anything, just show up to have a fantastic week. Kay your professionalism and knowledge about these things are to be commended. Again thank you so much. – Grethlyn Orr

Grethlyn, we are so happy you enjoyed your trip! We are committed to providing the best service possible from both ourselves and the properties and vendors we represent.

About the Jewel of the Seas

This gorgeous boat from the Royal Caribbean cruise line features: 6 pools and whirlpools, 100 plus spa treatments, 16 bars and lounges, Broadway-style shows, a Rock-climbing wall, a mini-golf course, a world class casino and so much more. Destinations available on the Jewel of the Seas vary throughout the year but usually include the southern Caribbean, various ports of call in California and an Alaska Sawyer Glacier Cruise.

Cruising with Elite Travel

From 4-day escapes to 14-day and longer luxury vacations Elite Travel can help you plan the perfect cruise. Whether you are considering a cruise because of the fact it’s an all-inclusive vacation or because you want to see several destinations while leaving the transportation to someone else we’re confident that we can find the best option to fit your needs and budget. Unique Adventure Trips for Traveling Solo

by Tammy Levent January 28, 2015
written by Tammy Levent

Travelsolo

When you’re traveling solo, you’ll likely have to pay the single-traveler price, which can be double what you’d pay if you went as half of a couple on a cruise ship or at an all-inclusive resort. One way to get around the Solo Traveler’s “tax” is to join a group tour, and there are many tour companies who specialize in accommodating adventurous solo travelers.

For the 18 to 35-year-old singletons, I recommend Contiki Tours. They’re young, fun, relatively inexpensive, and take travelers on wild trips through Europe, Australia, Latin America, even Egypt. They can be fast-paced, but if you want to cover a lot of ground during the day and go clubbing all night, it’s perfect. You can also choose to room with someone to cut costs, or have your own room for a little extra cost. These tours are more about adventure and socializing than history lessons, but the history is there too – you just might be too tired from bar-hopping to remember much of it.

When mature adventurers come in, I turn to Globus or Cosmos tours. Globus covers Europe, South America, Africa, Asia, Australia, and the Middle East, and the accommodations are more comfortable and luxurious. Cosmos offers packages that are budget-friendly to places like Africa, Europe, and North America – I like their National Parks series in particular. Both tour companies emphasize education, not just sight-seeing. In fact, I’d recommend taking down notes so you don’t forget what happened where and when.

Women’s solo adventure travel is a quickly expanding market, but as women, we often don’t feel safe unless we have some sort of group around us. The boutique tour company, WanderTours, gives that safety net while providing authentic adventures to places well off the beaten path, like Cambodia and Vietnam, Bhutan, India, and Papua New Guinea. It’s not explicitly educational (there are no quizzes at the end), but you do get a crash-course in the history, culture, and social issues of your destination.

But, there’s also the purely solo route of hiring an independent tour guide and setting up your own private tour. You choose the places you’d like to go, you decide how long you want to shop, sight-see, and take photos, and you have an expert guide with you to help you every step of the way. Just let your travel agent know what you’d like to experience and learn about and they can connect you with cooking classes, language classes, and tour guides knowledgeable about local history, art and architecture. It’s not a budget option, but it sure is fun.

Meliá Hotels Review

by Tammy Levent January 15, 2015
written by Tammy Levent

Gran Melia Puerto Rico Melia Caribe Tropical Dominican Republic

Meliá Hotels stole Christmas!

Two of our clients had some terrible experiences on vacation at two different resorts around Christmas and as a result of the way the resort company handled the two situations Elite Travel has decided not to offer any packages for any Meliá Hotels effective immediately.

It’s never easy to make a decision to pull an entire branch of properties from the list of resorts we sell packages for, but sometimes it’s necessary because our number one goal is to only offer the best vacations to our customers. We always tell prospective clients and current clients the truth and as such we feel it is our duty to expose the reasons why we are dropping Melia properties from our options of reputable brands.

Carey and her family wanted a wonderful Christmas getaway in Puerto Rico. We sent them to Gran Meliá Puerto Rico. She paid for a top of the line suite and wanted an adjoining room. Not only did Carey not get the view she paid for, but the resort attempted to charge the clients an exuberant amount in additional fees for the adjoining room.

Carey had this to say, “The property was a major disappointment. There was a 10 hour wait time for check in. Altogether the food was bad. For example, they served raw hamburgers. We were promised a beach view and instead of that we got a view of a building along with terrible smells and an infestation of mold. This was ultimately one of the worst vacation resorts we have experienced!”

The resort treated our clients badly when they voiced their concerns. Of course, Elite Travel worked with our clients to salvage their vacation, but the resort made things much worse than they needed to be without any offer to resolve any of the problems our clients endured.

Andrew was hoping for a much needed retreat due to a recent family loss so he was hoping to take his girlfriend somewhere nice for the holidays. We sent them to the Meliá Hotel in the Dominican Republic. Needless to say this retreat for our clients was anything but. They complained of bad food and had mold in their rooms as well. They were moved not once, not twice, but three times and each of the three rooms had mold and felt filthy.

Then, at the restaurant the staff exhibited unsanitary behavior that left our clients with no appetite- from putting the condiments on the floor while cleaning the tables to using dirty table cloths its not surprising they didn’t want to eat in this place.

Again, Elite did everything we could to salvage the vacation for our clients with no assistance from the resort.

If two horrible experiences can happen at two completely different properties that exhibit the same level of bad customer service, unsanitary conditions and an overall lack of care then it’s clear that this company needs some serious changes before Elite Travel would ever consider sending someone there again.

The saddest part is both Meliá properties are in stunning locations and the exterior of the buildings is still beautiful. Just look at their former reviews online and you’ll see that most of the reviews on the properties used to be overwhelmingly positive. In fact, even our clients that we sent to both of these properties said they were beautiful with the exception of the poor room and restaurant conditions and appalling customer service. It is our sincere hope that the management behind Meliá Hotels will see this post and the recent bad reviews and restore their properties back to their former glory. The more you let a property suffer and get run down the closer you get to closing your doors for good.

Cheap Family Vacations

by Tammy Levent January 14, 2015
written by Tammy Levent

happy family
When you’re cutting costs on your family vacation, don’t cut quality and safety. It’s not worth staying in a dirty room in a bad part of town just because you don’t want to pay full-ticket price – there are a lot of other options! If you’re looking at an international vacation, to say the Caribbean, I highly recommend all-inclusive resorts as the most cost-effective choice. Young children might qualify to come for free, and older children will have plenty to do. NOW and Dreams have excellent kids and teens programs that go far beyond providing Xboxes in a clubhouse – they get everyone out and active, having a blast. But, my favorite part of the all-inclusive experience for families is that it’s flexible. If you constantly hear “I’m hungry!” “I’m tired!” “I don’t want to do this, I want to do that!” – then going all-inclusive will save you a lot of headaches. And, you always know how much your trip will cost, because you’ve paid for it all up front. It’s vacation budgeting made easy.

Now, for domestic vacations on a budget, I recommend families look at renting houses or condos near the attractions they want to visit. And whatever you do – Don’t stay on Disney property! You can find 2-3 bedroom condos just outside the mouse’s turf and pay a lot less.

Tips for Saving Money in Europe

by Tammy Levent January 5, 2015
written by Tammy Levent

50 Euro Notes for Saving Money in Europe Post

Regardless of what major city you plan to visit in Europe, the simple fact remains that traveling there is expensive. From tourist traps to costs that slowly add up- your budget can be exceeded quicker than you expect. Here are a few ideas to help you save money on your next European vacation:

Travel Light

Airlines that fly internationally generally will allow one or two checked bags included in your ticket, but adding too much luggage can cost you $25 per additional bag and up! Not only will having fewer bags save you fees for traveling, it will make you think twice about whether or not you need a bunch of overpriced souvenirs to bring home with you. Speaking of which….

Don’t Buy a Bunch of Souvenirs

I get it. You’re on a trip and you want to bring home memories of the trip and/or want to bring gifts for your friends and family back home. Instead of spending a bunch of Euro on overpriced knick knacks take a lot of photos and then make prints when you get home to give to folks. If you really want to physically bring something home to someone or for yourself don’t just get crappy shot glasses and t-shirts. Make sure it is something meaningful- a shell from one of the beaches you visit or pressed flowers from a garden, for example.

Go Local!

Savvy travelers know that the tourist hot spots are where the most expensive restaurants, nightclubs and attractions lie. Go where the locals go for cheaper food- you could save enough to have your dinner and a glass of wine or two.

Go in the Off Season

Prices always go up when the demand is high. Visiting in the less busy months can save you as much as 50% on lodging and your flights.

Skip the Fancy Drinks

Fancy coffees and alcohol can add up fast, so don’t just drink for drinking’s sake. Put a cap on the number of cappuccinos you will consume and savor every drop and save the adult beverages for special nights instead of drinking every night of the trip.

Three Top Private Beaches

by Tammy Levent January 2, 2015
written by Tammy Levent

For those times you really want to get away from it all, skip those beaches with loud crowds and head to your own private getaway. With a couple of thousand dollars and two weeks’ notice, you can buy a round-trip plane ticket to head to your own private paradise. Finding access to a private beach is easier than you might think.

Kos, Greece

For around $2,500 per person, you can fly from Chicago to Kos, Greece, leaving the hustle and bustle of the city behind for clear water, tropical breezes, and soft, white sands. On some parts of the island, the beach resembles a pebble-like consistency, and the water is often described as emerald, rather than crystalline — but everyone who visits agrees it is beautiful.

Many beaches offer tourist amenities, such as restaurants, bars, beach umbrellas and lounge chairs. On the Southwestern coast at Polemi Beach, nudists are welcome. Not quite ready for swimming au naturel? Bring a barely-there bikini or a form flattering two-piece that will leave plenty of luggage room for souvenirs. The choice is yours at Polemi Beach. You can either wear some sexy swimwear you purchased, or carry it with you in case you decide to visit several beaches while you are in Greece. The best time to visit the beach is early in the morning to avoid the crowds.

Liguria and Alassio, Italy

For a truly intimate, private beach setting, consider Northern Italy, on the western coast of Liguria, in the small hamlet of Alassio. The Villa Della Pergola is perched atop a gorgeous hill overlooking the water. For less than $800 per night, per couple, guests have access to a private beach, private gardens, free breakfast and up to 1,000 square feet of living space. The atmosphere is considered cozy, but lively, in the village. However, the boutique hotel has only 12 guest rooms, so privacy is assured. There’s nothing like sitting down to read a book on your tablet without having to listen to screaming children running by.

Photo of Vernazza, Liguria, Italy, by Muzykant via Wikimedia Commons

Negril, Jamaica

Eclectic Negril, Jamaica, is both invigorating and romantic. Visitors have opportunities to party around the clock with lively music, cocktail bars and centralized restaurants. There are also many private beaches covered in silky white sand contrasted against clear, cerulean waters. It’s perfect for snorkeling, diving, sunbathing or just walking hand-in-hand along a deserted beach watching the sunrise. If you’re still contemplating your honeymoon destination, Negril is a worthy consideration.

All-inclusive couples’ packages average around $420 per night, per couple, in mid-August until mid-October. Complimentary inclusions include golf, tennis, shopping shuttles and a fitness center.

Big Birthdays = Big Travel Plans

by Tammy Levent December 18, 2014
written by Tammy Levent

40 Cake for Big Birthdays - Big Travel Plans

More and more clients are coming in asking me to help them celebrate their Big 3-0’s, Big 4-0’s, and Big 5-0’s in an exotic destination. These birthday travel plans are becoming such a frequent request that I think it’s time to call it a trend. Where should you go on your next birthday? Well, that just depends on how young you feel.

Thrifty 30

Many 30-year-olds are almost as strapped for cash as they were in their 20’s – between the economy and saving for their first house. However, the thirties might also be the last few years before children, mortgages, and other adult responsibilities turn your duffel bag into a diaper bag, and your travel funds into home repairs. Live it up now! Plan a road trip around the American South; book a tour to Vietnam and Cambodia; or blaze a trail through Costa Rican rainforest. Or, you know, rent a beach house for a week and work on your tan (even young people need rest and recuperation sometimes).

Just For You 40

Life is a whirlwind of family responsibilities and work stress, and what you need is a place where you can let go of it all and focus on you. I love Body Holiday at LeSport for just that. Designed to re-calibrate your body, mind and spirit, this gorgeous resort in St. Lucia offers yoga, massage, gourmet healthy dining, and activities that will help you get back to being the best version of yourself.

50-Year Fantasy

What you need is for someone to wait on you hand and foot while you lounge in comfort, sipping your frozen margarita – am I right? Don’t just fantasize about it – book it! My absolute favorite destination for feeling taken care of is Secrets Wild Orchid in Montego Bay, Jamaica. Top shelf liquor, gourmet dining, and activities like tennis, yoga, sailboats and kayaks, and cooking classes all come with the all-inclusive package. Not to mention a world-class spa – and proximity to five championship golf courses. It’s one of my favorite resorts.

On-Board With 60

When you want to spend more time with your kids and grandkids, a family cruise can be a wonderful and affordable option for multigenerational travel. Why not celebrate your birthday with everyone you love on board a ship headed to an exciting destination? Cruise ships leave from Florida shores every day with destinations and itineraries for every taste. Isn’t it time you were on one of them?

Sitting Pretty at 70+

I have two words for the 70 and older crowd: canal cruise. Europe is crisscrossed with ancient waterways and the best way to see the sights is to use them. Charter an 8-12 passenger barge for a week with your friends or family, and float by castles and medieval villages while sipping local wines and indulging in cheese and chocolates. Most barges pride themselves on their food, and you’ll be drifting through the best wine regions in the world. Barge travel is also the perfect solution for those with mobility issues.

Some people might feel depressed at getting another year older, but I challenge anyone to feel down while flying a mile-high on the way to your next adventure.

Three Amazing Whiskey Tours In Edinburgh You Will Never Forget

by Tammy Levent December 8, 2014
written by Tammy Levent

Edinburgh

As the capital city of Scotland and home to the castle, Festival and one of the most interesting city centers in Europe, Edinburgh attracts visitors from all over the world. Although there are no whisky distilleries in the city, there are a number of options for learning more about this cornerstone of Scottish culture. Whisky is both an important export and something which is deeply rooted in the Scottish way of life, where it is known as uisge beatha, or the water of life.

Whisky Heritage Centre

Right at the top of the Royal Mile, just a stone’s throw from the Castle is the Whisky Heritage Centre, there is an interactive tourist attraction which will tell you everything you ever wanted to know about how whisky is made, bottled and distributed. Experts tell visitors about the art of blending. There is even the chance to taste some whisky for yourself, with soft drinks as an option for children. The Scotch Whisky Centre has won numerous awards for its inventive approach to tourism, and has the largest collection of bottles of whisky anywhere in the world.

Scotland Whisky

If you’d prefer to see the real thing, one of the best places to see whisky making is on the island of Islay, off the west coast of Scotland. Small mini-bus tours, which show the 8 main distilleries over 4 days, are very popular and will give visitors and locals alike a great insight into every aspect of whisky making. Apart from the whisky making, Islay is a beautiful, remote island with plenty to see apart from whisky, making it the ideal option for people wanting to experience a true flavor of Scotland in depth. The small size of the groups on the tour also gives a great chance to get to know other tourists and to ask lots of questions too.

Timberbush

If you can’t spare 4 days out of your holiday to take a trip round distilleries, then the one day tour offered by Timberbush could be the perfect solution. Leaving from Edinburgh early in the morning, the tour takes visitors to picturesque Perthshire, home to both distilleries and the famous Gleneagles estate. The tour takes in Glenturret distillery, the oldest in Scotland, and the Famous Grouse Experience, home to an interactive tasting bar, restaurant and the warehouses where the whisky matures until it is ready to be consumed.

Author: Kelvin French is a whiskey enthusiast and recommends you try these tours out.

The World’s Most Unusual Hotels

by Tammy Levent December 8, 2014
written by Tammy Levent

Poseidon Undersea Resort in Fiji

You’re planning a holiday but all the hotels seem to look the same. Don’t worry, though, as there really are some unusual ones. If you want to sleep with the fishes or stay in a shoe, there’s a hotel somewhere in the world that will offer you a room.

Water Holidays

Start your holiday with a dive into the sea at the Jules Undersea Lodge in Florida. There’s actually no other way of getting into your room. Once there, you can watch all the sea life around you while you stay in air conditioned comfort. If you don’t know how to swim, there’s a three-hour crash course available.

But if you are looking for top-class comfort underwater, try the Poseidon Undersea Resort in Fiji. Here you won’t have to dive to reach your room because there’s a convenient lift for the purpose.

If frozen water is your preference, try the Jukkasjarvi Ice Hotel near Kiruna in northern Sweden. This was the world’s first ever ice hotel, with a season that runs from December to April. All the furniture and even the glasses in the bar are made of ice but you will sleep comfortably on reindeer skins on your ice bed.

Stone Age

Return to the Stone Age but with all modern amenities at the Cappadocia Cave Suites in Turkey. The caves have been carved out of tufa, a kind of volcanic stone that resembles pumice and have been homes to local residents for the last 2,000 years.

You’ll be able to choose rooms with a lot of windows, just a skylight or no windows at all. It will be cool in the room even if the temperatures are sweltering outside, although you may need extra heating during the winter months. And even if your room door is a vast wheel made of stone that rolls shut, you will be able to sleep on a soft bed.

Try the modern version of a Stone Age dwelling in an old nuclear bunker in Sevelen, near Zurich in Switzerland. This is Switzerland’s first zero-star hotel – the Null Stern Hotel. There’s no breakfast on offer in most of the rooms but a “luxury” room comes with coffee in the morning. The heating comes from hot water bottles hanging from the wall, but the management kindly gives you a complimentary set of ear plugs to block out the noise of the ventilation system.

These bunkers are part of Switzerland’s civil defense system and they have to revert to their original purpose within 24 hours of any emergency. So don’t bother unpacking during your stay.

New Zealand

Stay in a boot as you explore the delights of New Zealand. The Boot Bed & Breakfast, also known as the Jester House, in Tasman South Island, lets you relive that nursery rhyme of the old woman who lived in a shoe. But this is a two-story house with curved walls in the correct places that offers you a romantic as well as an unusual atmosphere.

Continue your New Zealand tour to Raglan, a stunning beach resort on the northern tip of North Island and check into a caboose – the last railway wagon of an old train – at the Solscape Eco Retreat. Or you can get down to earth in style in a tipi, the local term for an animal-skin tent. If you need to keep extra active, you can also go ‘woofing’ – that’s trying your hand at some work on an organic farm – or kite boarding or surfing in the ocean.

Before you go anywhere, however, you should ensure that you have a good travel insurance policy to cover against all eventualities.
