Learning the Language of Your Destination

by Tammy Levent March 11, 2015
written by Tammy Levent

Modern Languages @ FLCC: Study Abroad in Costa Rica 2012 - 187

It’s a nice gesture. It’s considered rude in many places to come to the area and not put forth at least a little effort into learning the language. It tells the locals that you don’t care enough to try.

It helps you to avoid paying too much. How can you negotiate prices at markets if you don’t know the language? Not being able to talk about why something costs so much and/or discuss other options could cause you to spend more on goods and services than you needed to.

You will be able to get what you want. Imagine going to a restaurant and not knowing how to say that you want the steak and potato and therefore getting something you don’t like. Not only did you not get what you wanted, but now it will be hard to explain that you received something displeasing without coming off as an obnoxious tourist.

Getting around the area will also become easier. Not knowing the names of the streets you need to take to get to your hotel or local attractions will make getting around the area harder than it needed to be. It can also cost you money because a taxi cab driver could take a different and more expensive route.

It’s easier than ever to learn a foreign language. With the hundreds of websites popping up daily and the countless youtube videos being uploaded teaching various languages there is nothing holding you back from learning. Many of these options are even free! You don’t have to be fluent; you just need at least the key phrases to get by while traveling.

Hiking the Pitons

by Tammy Levent March 3, 2015
written by Tammy Levent

Pitons

Looking for an adventure that is both challenging and rewarding? Consider hiking the Pitons in St. Lucia.

Check out this testimonial we received from one of our clients who just did this in early January:

The Pitons were ridiculous… you were right for calling us crazy. We made it to the top and back down in a little under 4 hours. Hardest thing I’ve ever done (and I’ve run 2 half marathons), but (our guide) Ernest was waiting for us at the bottom with beers! Glad we did it though! – Valerie and Jeff Collignon

Here’s what you need to know if you want to hike the Pitons:

It’s a good idea to be in good physical shape for this hike. Even frequent hikers have been known to abandon this adventure before reaching the summit.

Bring water and snacks but put them in a backpack. Many hikers have said you’ll need both hands to handle this hike as there will be some climbing involved.

Be prepared for a minimum of two hours up the mountain and two hours back down it. There are places to stop along the way if you need a break.

Dress comfortably and prepare to get dirty. Although it’s mostly hiking, like I mentioned earlier there is some climbing required to get to the top so don’t be surprised if your belly ends up rubbing against the mountain. Be sure to wear tennis shoes too. You won’t make it in flip flops!

The view from the top is your reward and many people say that the view is more than worth it if you can make it all the way up. Be sure to bring your camera if nothing else than to have proof you made it to the top for bragging rights.

Have you ever been hiking or rock climbing? Tell us about your experience in the comments below!

5 Zip Lining Hot Spots

by Tammy Levent February 4, 2015
written by Tammy Levent

Elite Adventure Travel

The wind in your hair, the gliding through the air; sigh, this must be almost what it feels like to be a bird. Ya know- aside from the fact that you’re wearing a safety helmet and you’re attached to a cable by a hook. Nonetheless, zip lining is one of the most exciting adventures one can experience. Here are 5 zip lining hot spots:

Costa Rica: Never mind the fact that Costa Rica is home to the world’s longest zip line course. Zip lining here boasts amazing views of waterfalls, the rainforest and even the ocean.

Icy Straight Point in Hoonah, Alaska: Picture this- 6 riders taking off simultaneously on parallel lines at an average speed of 60 mph racing to the bottom of a 1,300 foot vertical drop. Not only is this 90 second ride a whirlwind experience, it also offers views of tree covered mountains and the ocean.

AdrenaLUNA, St. Lucia: This tour starts off with a short hike through the peaceful forest. This quickly turns into an adrenaline rush as you scramble across floating stairs past Eagle’s Claw, zip through the canopy from tree to tree with 18 platforms, and swing from the Tarzan Swing onto Tarantula’s Nest, then rappel down on the Boa Rappel to the terra firma.

The Simatai Great Wall, China: Imagine zip lining with the Great Wall of China being one of your views. That is exactly what you get on this tour. You begin at the Simatai section of the great wall and take in aerial views of the mountains and the Mandarin Duck Lake on your way down.

Hunter Moutain, New York: Located right at Hunter Mountain in the heart of the beautiful Northern Catskills, this New York zip lining company does one thing the sets it apart from most places- they have night time zip lining tours! Immerse yourself in the forest at night, with help from the moon to guide you into 9 illuminated tree platforms. Throw in some stargazing and nocturnal animal sightings to push it over the top.

Have you ever gone zip lining? Where is your favorite place in the world to defy gravity?

10 Places to Skydive

by Tammy Levent January 29, 2015
written by Tammy Levent

skydiving

Are you the type person that would get pleasure from jumping out of a perfectly working plane to plummet to the Earth in freefall before pulling a chord to parachute slowly to the ground for your final moments of descent? Then, this is the post for you. We found 10 awesome places to skydive!

  1. Dubai, United Arab Emirates- Skydiving in Dubai offers aerial views of endless sands, its palm-shaped artificial island, the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa and more.
  2. Florida– Not only is Florida where Elite Travel’s headquarters are, but it’s also a fantastic choice for skydiving newbies. Zephyrhills, Kennedy Space Center, Ft. Myers Beach- the state is filled with skydiving locations for tandem divers new to the activity.
  3. Fox Glacier, New Zealand- Skydiving here means a backdrop of the Southern Alps, glaciers, rainforest and the ocean.
  4. Hawaii– The opportunity to see the big island from an aerial view is what brings people here in droves to jump out of planes.
  5. Interlaken, Switzerland- Two words, Swiss Alps.
  6. Mount Everest in Nepal– If you can’t climb it, jump onto it!
  7. Namib Desert, Namibia- Imagine descending into a vast empty desert. The patterns created in the sand, the serenity of nothingness- skydiving here is like a surreal dream.
  8. Pattaya, Thailand- According to the Travel Channel Pattaya is the only full-time drop zone in Southeast Asia. Pattaya skydivers will enjoy stunning views of Thailand’s west coast as they drop into lush green fields.
  9. Wollongong, Sydney, Australia- Imagine the beautiful Australia coast line from above. Skydiving over Wollongong Beach gives skydivers the views of the pristine beach, dolphins, whales, and other marine life.
  10. Zambia– Victoria Falls in Zambia may be too much to take in from the ground, but its aerial views will take your breath away.

Have your ever been skydiving? What was it like for you? Leave a comment below and tell us about it.

Unique Adventure Trips for Traveling Solo

by Tammy Levent January 28, 2015
written by Tammy Levent

Travelsolo

When you’re traveling solo, you’ll likely have to pay the single-traveler price, which can be double what you’d pay if you went as half of a couple on a cruise ship or at an all-inclusive resort. One way to get around the Solo Traveler’s “tax” is to join a group tour, and there are many tour companies who specialize in accommodating adventurous solo travelers.

For the 18 to 35-year-old singletons, I recommend Contiki Tours. They’re young, fun, relatively inexpensive, and take travelers on wild trips through Europe, Australia, Latin America, even Egypt. They can be fast-paced, but if you want to cover a lot of ground during the day and go clubbing all night, it’s perfect. You can also choose to room with someone to cut costs, or have your own room for a little extra cost. These tours are more about adventure and socializing than history lessons, but the history is there too – you just might be too tired from bar-hopping to remember much of it.

When mature adventurers come in, I turn to Globus or Cosmos tours. Globus covers Europe, South America, Africa, Asia, Australia, and the Middle East, and the accommodations are more comfortable and luxurious. Cosmos offers packages that are budget-friendly to places like Africa, Europe, and North America – I like their National Parks series in particular. Both tour companies emphasize education, not just sight-seeing. In fact, I’d recommend taking down notes so you don’t forget what happened where and when.

Women’s solo adventure travel is a quickly expanding market, but as women, we often don’t feel safe unless we have some sort of group around us. The boutique tour company, WanderTours, gives that safety net while providing authentic adventures to places well off the beaten path, like Cambodia and Vietnam, Bhutan, India, and Papua New Guinea. It’s not explicitly educational (there are no quizzes at the end), but you do get a crash-course in the history, culture, and social issues of your destination.

But, there’s also the purely solo route of hiring an independent tour guide and setting up your own private tour. You choose the places you’d like to go, you decide how long you want to shop, sight-see, and take photos, and you have an expert guide with you to help you every step of the way. Just let your travel agent know what you’d like to experience and learn about and they can connect you with cooking classes, language classes, and tour guides knowledgeable about local history, art and architecture. It’s not a budget option, but it sure is fun.

Meliá Hotels Review

by Tammy Levent January 15, 2015
written by Tammy Levent

Gran Melia Puerto Rico Melia Caribe Tropical Dominican Republic

Meliá Hotels stole Christmas!

Two of our clients had some terrible experiences on vacation at two different resorts around Christmas and as a result of the way the resort company handled the two situations Elite Travel has decided not to offer any packages for any Meliá Hotels effective immediately.

It’s never easy to make a decision to pull an entire branch of properties from the list of resorts we sell packages for, but sometimes it’s necessary because our number one goal is to only offer the best vacations to our customers. We always tell prospective clients and current clients the truth and as such we feel it is our duty to expose the reasons why we are dropping Melia properties from our options of reputable brands.

Carey and her family wanted a wonderful Christmas getaway in Puerto Rico. We sent them to Gran Meliá Puerto Rico. She paid for a top of the line suite and wanted an adjoining room. Not only did Carey not get the view she paid for, but the resort attempted to charge the clients an exuberant amount in additional fees for the adjoining room.

Carey had this to say, “The property was a major disappointment. There was a 10 hour wait time for check in. Altogether the food was bad. For example, they served raw hamburgers. We were promised a beach view and instead of that we got a view of a building along with terrible smells and an infestation of mold. This was ultimately one of the worst vacation resorts we have experienced!”

The resort treated our clients badly when they voiced their concerns. Of course, Elite Travel worked with our clients to salvage their vacation, but the resort made things much worse than they needed to be without any offer to resolve any of the problems our clients endured.

Andrew was hoping for a much needed retreat due to a recent family loss so he was hoping to take his girlfriend somewhere nice for the holidays. We sent them to the Meliá Hotel in the Dominican Republic. Needless to say this retreat for our clients was anything but. They complained of bad food and had mold in their rooms as well. They were moved not once, not twice, but three times and each of the three rooms had mold and felt filthy.

Then, at the restaurant the staff exhibited unsanitary behavior that left our clients with no appetite- from putting the condiments on the floor while cleaning the tables to using dirty table cloths its not surprising they didn’t want to eat in this place.

Again, Elite did everything we could to salvage the vacation for our clients with no assistance from the resort.

If two horrible experiences can happen at two completely different properties that exhibit the same level of bad customer service, unsanitary conditions and an overall lack of care then it’s clear that this company needs some serious changes before Elite Travel would ever consider sending someone there again.

The saddest part is both Meliá properties are in stunning locations and the exterior of the buildings is still beautiful. Just look at their former reviews online and you’ll see that most of the reviews on the properties used to be overwhelmingly positive. In fact, even our clients that we sent to both of these properties said they were beautiful with the exception of the poor room and restaurant conditions and appalling customer service. It is our sincere hope that the management behind Meliá Hotels will see this post and the recent bad reviews and restore their properties back to their former glory. The more you let a property suffer and get run down the closer you get to closing your doors for good.

Cheap Family Vacations

by Tammy Levent January 14, 2015
written by Tammy Levent

happy family
When you’re cutting costs on your family vacation, don’t cut quality and safety. It’s not worth staying in a dirty room in a bad part of town just because you don’t want to pay full-ticket price – there are a lot of other options! If you’re looking at an international vacation, to say the Caribbean, I highly recommend all-inclusive resorts as the most cost-effective choice. Young children might qualify to come for free, and older children will have plenty to do. NOW and Dreams have excellent kids and teens programs that go far beyond providing Xboxes in a clubhouse – they get everyone out and active, having a blast. But, my favorite part of the all-inclusive experience for families is that it’s flexible. If you constantly hear “I’m hungry!” “I’m tired!” “I don’t want to do this, I want to do that!” – then going all-inclusive will save you a lot of headaches. And, you always know how much your trip will cost, because you’ve paid for it all up front. It’s vacation budgeting made easy.

Now, for domestic vacations on a budget, I recommend families look at renting houses or condos near the attractions they want to visit. And whatever you do – Don’t stay on Disney property! You can find 2-3 bedroom condos just outside the mouse’s turf and pay a lot less.

Camping Trip Essentials

by Tammy Levent January 5, 2015
written by Tammy Levent

Camping in Bishop, CA

There is something truly special about camping and just living in nature for a little while. And with the trend of glamping (glamorous camping) growing in popularity, more and more people are hitting the road searching for adventure and their own pieces of heaven. Should you decide to go camping here are some things we highly suggest you bring with you:

Tent- The home base of your camp site is your tent. Sure, it is thinner than the walls of a building, but it can protect you from many of the elements.

Food- If you don’t plan on hunting for your supper, you will definitely need to bring something to eat along with you. Bring some water while you are at it and should you think you can just drink from the streams, make sure to bring some water filters or purification tablets too.

Sleeping bag and possibly an air mattress- Bringing an air mattress is becoming more of a requirement in the age of glamping and we will admit it’s a lot more comfortable than just sleeping on the hard ground.

Sunscreen- Enough said

Insect Repellent- Again, enough said.

Toiletries and towels- You’ve got to get clean sometime.

First- Aid Kit- When you are doing physical activities in nature splinters, bites and cuts are possible so bringing a first-aid kit is never a bad idea.

A stove or matches- Whether you want to build a fire or want to use a gas stove you’ll most likely need something for cooking. Why matches? Well, rubbing two sticks together to start a fire takes a lot longer than you may think and we prefer all the glory of the fire without all the work.

Mess kit- You’ll need something to cook your food in and a mess kit is a great all-in-one option that allows you too cook your food in the same container you will be eating out of. It’s a good idea to also bring utensils to cook and eat with.

Bring a chair- You’ll thank us for this suggestion when you are sitting around the fire in comfort instead of on the dirt.

Did we miss something you think is essential for a camping trip? Leave us a comment below with your must bring camping tools.
