“It’s My Bag” is a charity founded by Tammy Levent to provide foster children with their suitcases, replacing the dehumanizing practice of carrying belongings in garbage bags.
Initiated in 2014 after a visit to a foster home, Levent was moved to action by the sight of children using trash bags for their items. This led her to mobilize her network and the community to donate backpacks and suitcases, thus giving foster children a sense of dignity and belonging.
The charity, which started from a single act of kindness, has grown into a national movement, driven by travel agents and community members alike, to ensure every child in foster care can proudly say, “It’s my bag.” This initiative provides practical assistance and sends a powerful message of worth and self-respect to these children.
Tammy Levent’s efforts have earned her the Dottie Berger MacKinnon Wings of Inspiration Award in 2019, recognizing her as a catalyst for positive change and a champion for foster children. Under Levent’s leadership, “It’s My Bag” has significantly impacted the world, delivering over 15,000 suitcases to foster and homeless children worldwide.
