Does that human look like lunch to you or are you still full from the one we had at breakfast? <- A little shark humor there! But seriously, have you ever wondered what sharks think when they encounter humans? Or do you just long to swim amongst these feared creatures? If you seek the chance to spend an afternoon with the beasts of the sea, shark diving may be for you.

There are many different places throughout the world that offer the chance to get up close and personal with sharks. Diving companies have set up shot in places such as Tahiti, Belize, Mexico, New York, California, the Florida Keys, the Bahamas, Fiji, Africa, Ecuador and more.

Some companies require that you be a certified diver (scuba dive tours), whereas others just require that you be able to swim (caged dives). What type of encounter are you looking for? If a company requires you be scuba certified they will require you show proof of certification, so make sure to check the requirements before you dive in.

Most caged dives feature a large cage big enough for between one and three people. You jump into the cage; you float and wait for your encounter. Scuba divers swim until they find the sharks.

The time of year and location you choose will determine what type of sharks you will see and how many you will see.

Scuba dives are the “riskier” form of swimming with sharks as there is nothing to protect you should an attack occur. However, many shark enthusiasts swear that swimming with sharks is generally not a risk at all.

Even with all of the people that jump in with sharks every year, there is only an average of 75 reported unprovoked attacks annually worldwide according to the International Shark Attack File of the Florida Museum of Natural History, University of Florida.

Of course, like famed sea-explorer Jacques Cousteau believed- one way to dissuade a shark attack is not to bleed and to get out of the water if someone is bleeding.
